Blade finish has been somewhat problematic. One spends a fair bit of time polishing out the scratches to turn out a good product and then you run into the problem of the sheath material, kydex in this case, putting scratches into the finish. Somewhat irritating. Now, the knives I put out are meant to be used and I anticipate the customer will put their fair bit of scratches on the blade before too long. This isn't meant as a justification for shoddy work, just thinking out loud here. With those conditions in mind, my solution has been to bring the blade to a satin finish and to follow up with hand sanding with a fine scotch-brite pad or the equivalent in alternating directions to mitigate the scratching problem. Seems to work.
Kydex as a sheath material allows me put out a good product at a price most guys can justify. The downside is the scratching, which in a working knife wouldn't seem to be problem. Sure, I've done the taping of the blade prior to molding; which by the way seems to affect retention and definition. I've also cleaned the interior of the sheath during the drilling and fastening, but there is always that little bit of grit that you can't see. Then you have the issue of the end user cutting something abrasive, greasy or dirty and then sheathing the knife without wiping or cleaning the blade. In this case you have now introduced dirt, grease and grit into a sheath to further scratch the blade. However, with kydex one can clean or sanitize it more easily than with leather and in the worst case a new one can be fabricated in less time than leather.

So I realize chisel grinds might not be everybody's cup of tea however I think in this application they may work. These are two I've made up for a friend who only knew that he wanted something in the boot dagger, dirk, skean dhu neighborhood. In building things and in solving problems I would like to think that function takes precedence over other considerations. I like things that work, are purposeful, and have an elegant simplicity to them, e.g. geodesic domes, click top ball point pens, Volvo 240 sedans, Smith & Wesson revolvers, etc. Anyway this was my stab at the problem, pun intended, a spear pointed chisel ground blade with a false top edge. They are not quite done, requiring scales and sheaths, if you are interested visit my business Facebook page: Beach Cities Ironworks, PM me, or email me at nine9jack9@yahoo.com.

This one is funny in that it is part of the continuing education and evolution of knifemaking for me. In the process of coming up with a pattern for a knife, I will normally sketch it out on paper and then transfer it onto a cardboard so as to have a better idea of how it will feel in the hand. In the past, I've even gone so far as to render it in wood. I digress, this knife started out as some dirk. I had already gone so far as to heat treat and grind the plunge and it just felt wrong. The knife didn't feel right. So I put it aside for a week and came to it and just started grinding here and there to see if I couldn't salvage it. The end result reminds me of Grohman Canadian pattern. It's funny to me because I was always curious about those knives and when I was in college and broke, there was always something more pressing. In any event this was the furthet thing from my conscious mind. I like it though and may tweak it somewhat in the future. Tell me what you think, visit my business Facebook: Beach Cities Ironworks, PM me, or email me at nine9jack9@yahoo.com.

I've always liked the clean lines and utility of the various iterations of the Kephart pattern knives I have seen and handled and this was my attempt at it. Forgive the pic. This one has a 4.75" blade, 9" oal in O1 and brown canvas micarta. This one has a more acute point than what would probably encountered on a more faithful rendition. Made a couple for some friends at work and they are holding up despite their initial misgivings about the perceived thinness of the stock used. Came up with this as an alternative to the drop point and spear points I had been playing with. Wanted something with more of a piercing point and that was still strong enough for most anything you would ask of a work knife. 4.5" blade, 8.25" oal, 1/8" O1 w/ brown canvas micarta handles. Comes with OD green kydex sheath of my design. If interested PM me or email me at nine9jack9@yahoo.com. Time is running out or at least I feel like it is. I don't want to be a full time knife maker but I wouldn't mind making just a few in the time I have left that would stay long after I'm gone. Weapon making can make you almost immortal I that kind of a comfort.
