My wife and I both have our own vehicles, and we each commute (in directly opposite directions) to work. Blissfully consuming petroleum products, we drive a combined 143 miles in round numbers. According to statistics I was able to find on the internet with a quick google search (hey man - this a blog.....) 91 percent of Americans commute in their own vehicle.

The average miles driven is 29.

The average commute for the driving American is ~24 minutes.

I am a little below average, but considering that the average commute time in New York City is 39 minutes, I can live with mediocrity here.

I have a defined route that I take religiously. I am programmed to this route, so I can daydream, check my calendar, arrange my game plan at work for the day, and sometimes pay attention to the road.

I am what is defined as an aggressive driver. I drive a consistent 5-10mph over the posted speed limits. I am frustrated by my fellow motorists.

Anyone that is going faster than I am is a maniac, anyone going slower is a moron. (Thanks to George Carlin for that line.)

I do not gesture or lose my cool anymore. When I was younger I was more prone to display my displeasure. Maturity pays off in little ways.

I have a specific parking spot at work. There are literally a thousand parking spots in the large corporate facility where I am employed.

I like an end spot, and I am willing to walk further to put my vehicle on the end. My insurance policy against a door-ding on at least one side.

I have a need to back my vehicle into the parking spot if I can. Makes for a quick getaway.

I recently spent a week in Belgium, and I had to commute about 14 miles each way from my hotel to the plant where I was working. Aside from the roundabouts, metric system, and the unnervingly polite and considerate drivers who stay in the right lane unless they are passing (!), the commute was pretty much the same from a mechanical process perspective.

The scenery and ales were both much better though.

Thu, 22 Dec 2011 05:11:18 GMT I have noticed while driving around that there are a significant number of guys that have repressed feelings of needing to be a law enforcement officer, but for some reason they were never allowed to carry a gun and perform in an official manner.

These guys then buy themselves a "cruiser" to drive and install fake antennas ( in multiples) and dual spot-lamps in the a-pillar. Their cars invariably have a "plain clothes" look, with steel wheels and larger tires.

When you encounter an Pheau-lice (pronounced Fo-leece) officer on the road, you slow down immediately until you sniff them out as being "pheaux".

I recently have encountered who I consider to be the Chief of Pheau-lice!

The Chief drives a mid-90's black Buick Skylark, with twin chrome spotlamps, 4 (!) apparently fake antennas on the trunk, and a new twist - an array of stick-on amber reflectors arranged across the front of the vehicle, which presents a very "official" look to the vehicle.

That is until you really get a good look at the car and, after a spell of riotous laughter, you realize that all this fellow can enforce is the display of bad taste and the need to be somehow "official".

I will strive to get pictures of the Pheau-lice officers in my area to post here, and if you are able to capture one in your area, I would be amused to see your picture.
