I bought a Wave way back when. This was the original model and resided in my glove box pretty much unused for a decade. I went to get it a couple weeks back and almost cut myself with the one hand blade. Really poor design I realized. Also, couldn't get half the tools out of the handle.

Went online and found that Leatherman had redesigned the Wave, in part because of the narrow blade which had the pad of your thumb pretty much on the edge of the blade when opening.

Anyway, I called Leatherman and they said to send it back and they'd send me the new one which they did. It's a better design and even though it came in a canvas Chicomm sheath, it fit the old leather sheath just fine.

And the tools are still made in the US regardless of some internet chatter I read during my googling.

Gerber MultiPlier 600 Pro Scout. Nice tool, I've had it for about 15 years or so. I love the ability to flick my wrist to pop out the pliers, so much so I switched from my previous Leatherman to this.

15 years is a long time, and it's breaking regularly on me now. The knife blade has snapped, the flat screwdriver blade has snapped, the fine flat blade has broken too. I think it's time to retire the old boy.

So I've heard that the latest Gerber tools, according to people I know and amazon reviews, aren't nearly as good, poorly constructed and easily broken. I'm also hearing/reading that the Leatherman products are excellent, still.

I like the new products put some of the blades on the outside, so they can be used without totally opening the tool. Scissors are a must as well, the Gerber ones have always been the best. I like the fact that Leatherman has micro-screwdrivers and accessory bits that go with the tool.

I dislike the butterfly opening need of the Leatherman; I've never liked the saw on the Gerber. I loved the saw on my old Leatherman, but I snapped it off really well on a small sapling one day.

One Leatherman I'm considering is the Wingman:

I like the size and simplicity. I love the sturdy scissors, and the fact they're on the outside with the knife.

We sell the Wave at Lowe's, with the concomitant 10% employee discount:

I like the multiplicity of tools, the essential blades on the outside, and the multi-bit tool setup, as well as the microdrivers. I don't like the scissors, I do use them a fair bit, and need them to be sharp and tough.

I am listening, all. I appreciate the feedback. :)

It is the original Leatherman tool, you know----when there was nothing else except this. So anyways, i am hard on my equipment, but i take care of it, so thats ok with me, but the sheath has failed. I need a new sheath. I have looked but can't seem to find one. It is a simple leather sheath with a snap. Can anyone steer me in the right direction ? I have looked at S M K W, to no avail. I really don't want velcro closure, or magnetic, that would never hold up to keeping it secure. Is custom sheath my only option ? Does anyone have one lying around that they are not using ? I ask this because a cordura nylon sheath was an option for it way back then. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. :D

Really needing some help finding the right multi-tool!

I've recently been searching for a multi-tool to fit my camping as well as EDC needs/wants, and I found that the Leatherman Charge TTI and the Leatherman Skeletool both come extraordinarily close. Unfortunately, the Charge is too bulky to comfortably carry in shorts while hiking and certainly is a little over sized for most every day requirements. I thought that the Skeletool would be perfect, but when camping I was extremely let down when i realized that it doesn't have a can opener! I had to make a hike back for my Swiss Army Knife just to eat my dinner. The other issue I've always had which was solved with these tools was having the knives fall out of my pockets while hiking/climbing or even sitting on the couch at someone else's house (potentially not a good situation). All I'm looking for is a multi-tool with pliers, a can opener, a pocket clip, something under 5.5 oz, and ideally one-handed opening, although that might be asking for a miracle. The weight part of this is really a must, since without it I could just carry my Charge TTI.

Any and all help would be extremely welcome as I've been searching for this imaginary tool for months now without luck. Thanks in advance for any input!

So my leatherman squirt took a crap a little bit ago and I haven't gotten around to going to the post office and getting some flat rate stuff to send it to leatherman yet and I ordered a few things yesterday from bladehq and I threw in the gerber dime to get free shipping cause I like to think I'm saving money sometimes.

Anyone have one, used one? Watcha think of it? My squirt lasted 2 years of hard use that, most of which should have been done with a full size in hindsight, but it lasted a good bit for what I put it through until I snapped the pliers. So for half the price I'm expecting 1 year of decent use. Or is the gerber that much lower?

I really just got it because its cheap and looked cool and I want to test it out. It has pretty much the same tools as the squirt.

So tell me about your experiences with it, only say something about it if you've actually used the thing too please. I know a lot of you aren't fans of gerber or anything chinese and some like to hate on that stuff just because of that fact. I see it all the time.
