Here is one that we've had around the shop since 2010, some info from Rick.....

Without further ado this is the first LOCKBACK XM-18. BUT this is not your normal lockback…This is what I call my improved lockback…let me explain…One of the weak areas in the lockback mechanism is the lockbar in that when you are applying downward force on the knife such as taking a heavy cut the force from that travels from the blade right through the lockbar,to keep the lockbar from moving backwards under this force is the small cross pin that goes through the lockbar into the two handle sides…a lot of times this is a small pin. I wanted to eliminate this area of weakness..so I have my blade using the thumbstuds as one of the lockup points. So all of that pressure is transferred directly into the handle case instead of in the lockbar. If you look at the picture looking at the top of the knife you will see a gap between the lockbar and the blade..this allows foreign material to escape the the lock notch…no more filling up that notch with pocket lint!..
The spring set up is also totally different than a conventional lockback . I wanted to continue the “open back” design of the XM-18 series..but how to do that when you need the lockbar spring for the lockbar which is traditionaly a leaf spring in the back of the knife…well how I accomplished that was I moved the springs to the outside! I put TWO outboard springs under the handle and between the liner and handle..there is a pin through the lockbar that engages these springs..so if a spring breaks you have another as a backup, and of course it is very easy to change out these springs..The lockbar pivot is also the large handle nut that I use on the regular XM’s…which brings up the point that this lockback is all screw construction..meaning this is one that you can work on…
Another cool feature o f this design is the blade stop feature when the blade is closed..on conventional lockbacks when the blade is closed and you have it in your hand you can move the blade towards the back of the knife by squeezing your hand…my design eliminates this because I have the blade stop on the bottom of the lockbar pivot engaging the choil of the blade..that makes the blade set in there firmly and not letting it move toward to back of the knife.
Overall this is a very solid lockback design and it takes the old lockback mechanism in a new more sturdy direction!
Now I know the big question a lot of you will have is when can we see these in production?...that I don’t know..haha..I would really like to see these out there in use..and you may see the mechanism in another design knife besides the XM-18…time will tell
But in the mean time I wanted to offer this proto up for auction and have some fun with it….Rob will spell out all the details of the auction and other words about the comments ect…
I want to sincerely thank you all for you ongoing continued support for Rick Hinderer Knives! As I have said time and again my dream would not be a reality without you all!

Hi guys,

This is my first post in the Rick Hinderer sub-forum and I thought I'd say that I'm extremely excited to get my hands on one later this year. I've been lusting after Hinderers for quite sometime but they've always been a bit cost prohibitive; however, I recently got my Navy contract and ship date so it looks like I'll finally be able get my hands on a Hinderer thanks to their wonderful military pricing.

At any rate, I recently found a picture of a Hinderer blade grind that I'd like to end up with. I'm pretty sure it's not the typical bowie grind but it sure looks like a bowie style. Anyone know for sure?

It was one of the Happiest days of my Life......

Yes and Thank God Rob was there at my first knife show lottery win...... I remember it like it was only several years ago.

I'm there. It's Friday and the Lottery is getting ready to commence. I'm Cool No Way, I never win anything so, I'll just hang w a y back and let everybody who stands a chance wiggle up front where the action is. Time to check for belly button lint.
Rick gives his speech (Now I know what it was like to hear MLK in person except, I still had no dream of winning)
They start pulling names, "Ima Plummer" , " Oooda Gooda", Kermit D. Frogg....... and "BAMM!!" WHAT???? WHO
Did He Just Say......... That was it.... Knees went weak. I'm asking to borrow an Adult Diaper and a Napkin
How the Hell do you get up there? and is there enough time before Rick says, " Oh Well, Next" I elbowed a couple People (little kids and an old woman) they didn't hit back so I was making progress.
I tried to remember my name just in csae I had to vouch for who I was, Where did I put that Damn Stub !
Wasn't in the diaper.
Only 40 feet to go......
OMG! I Won! Was I going to have to make an acceptance speech? Would the press or the IRS be there?
39 feet to go.....

I get there and time slowed down to a crawl (4 seconds had elapsed since my name was called, longest Hour of my life) and Now here I was..... at the Table! Life was about to be all worth it.
I handed Pete a couple thousand dollars and said, "Take what you want".
Rick is smiling.
Rob was growling.
Mike was singing gospel Hymns and telling Rob to be nice.
Pete was ordering jewelry on his smart phone with his new found booty.

I looked at the table and ......... Nothin.

My brain had completely vapor locked. I saw nothing, I mumbled and gurggled ( I didn't even understand me)
Rick said, " Hi Scott"
I farted.
I started pointing at a 3" production spanto flipper (it was pretty, Orange and shiney) I started to mumble a barely coherant , " Daaaaaa Ahhhhhhh Ummmmmm ......shiney......"

Rob pointed to the Right (His Left) and said, " I think you might like that one".

It was my Beautiful XM 24 DLC in FDE !!! I agreed with Rob, I did like it.

Pete gave me $450.00 in change and I started the long walk back wondering when my breathing would start again and whether anyone wanted that diaper back.

It was very exciting, Great experience - I Highly recommend it!!

Rob's still right - I love that knife. So, IF you Win (and I hope you do) just look at Rob and grunt - Pete will give you back change.

I was lucky enough to pick one of the 3.5 Bead Blast scales when they were available recently. I knew all of my Hinderer's were stonewashed, by seeing how bead blast was all that was available, I picked one up anyway.

Scale came in today and the craftmanship is second to none. Top shelf all the way around, nice job Rick and guys at the Ranch!

Didn't like how the bead blast contrast my stonewash blade and locking side, so I decided to stonewash the scale myself. Took some 1500 grit to it first for 5-10 minutes, then into the media of ceramic and natural stones for a quick stonewash.

Tried to capture the finish best I could on camera. It looks better in person I think for sure. I think you can tell better in the pic where I compare the stonewash locking side of my slicer with the Ti scale I just stonewashed. The stonewash I applied is pretty close to what the blade and locking side look like, I am very pleased with the results. Hopefully more of the Ti scales and standoffs are in the works. It really does make the knife feel like a beast! (more so than before :D)
