What was the most remarkable fact about this survival story is, not one man died during the whole ordeal. Even when the ice broke up, and Shackleton ordered all items left behind, and limited each man to just two pounds of perosnal gear, they made do with very little.

When I was a kid, I wanted to run off and become a French canoe voyager for the Hudson Bay Company. I was crushed when I found out they didn't exist anymore.

That sounds like a lot more fun than joining the French Foreign Legion.

It may even have been less dangerous.

French voyagers worked for Northwest trading company. Hudson bay was British, and primarily operated trade posts instead of going out to the natives like the voyagers did. Hudsons bay used large multiman rowboats with sails called york boats to resupply the posts and transfer furs. It might have happened after the merger, not entirely sure. I hope I didn't just re-crush your childhood dreams.
