Haha, nice job J! Looks tasty.

Those crazy birds were everywhere in North Dakota and constantly getting run over. The cockerels would stand on the side of the road jumping around to fight each other and sometimes both would get squished, or the female they were obliviously fighting over would get flushed into the road to die... either of which were actually much more comical than it reads. It reminded me of the dodos in Ice Age losing their last female. I didn't think there were many birds dumber than chickens, but pheasants and grouse definitely are.

    Jeff,

I'm not going to post her pic on the net but my 11 year old daughter got her first pheasant a couple of Saturdays ago. It was pointed by our Brittany that I trained myself. First bird my daughter ever had a chance to shoot at and first shot. Then without any coaching from me she insisted on cleaning it herself. I am one proud Daddy! Good luck on the pheasants.

    Thanks guys

jball... Yes sir those birds were tasty! The fiancé cooked them with a sour cream and paprika sauce over noodles!

Tom...thanks we have to tear you away from bow hunting for deer for a pheasant hunt pal!

Tim you aren't wrong...pheasants are pretty dopey..hope you and the bride are doing well?? glad to get to meet you in person at blade. I still enjoy reading your posts and find them very informative. I am with you all the way with the Kill devil over the rattle hawk bro!

Jerry That is great about your daughter, great family times and memories that will last a lifetime, very cool you have a brittany, I have two buddies with springers and one with an english pointer.

This year one of the springers and the pointer is down with injuries (unrelated to hunting) so we have been relying on a 8 month old springer pup and she is learning really quick!

I have a good buddy that brings his daughter hunting with us and I can tell you If I am blessed with daughters instead of sons I hope they have interest in fishing and hunting....it has to be in the DNA right?? lol

T, I was actually 2 for 2 on saturday! the bag limit here is 2 a day....not all days go this well of course but all the trap and skeet shooting had paid off! Of course you are always welcome up north for some hunting! Pheasant is still my favorite but the dogs kick up rabbits too and they are also in season...fast buggers!

I will be in South Dakota Nov.1 -7 killing birds!!!! I save most of my vacation time for bird season. I hunt every weekend from opener to close! I might get to hunt Montana next year! We usually hunt the panhandle of Oklahoma and all through Kansas and up to South Central Nebraska and Quail hunt in panhandle of Texas. Busy time of the year for me! Nice pics BTW!

I really miss pheasant hunting, there are very few wild birds left in IL, and if you think a wild pheasant is dumb you should see the farm raised birds they release at the state parks for hunting. They will practically fly into your game bag, not much sport in it and they are small. I think when they let them loose they immediately try to make friends with the coyotes that are following the truck releasing them. I have heard that there are less birds here due to the corn production reducing the calcium levels in the soil so they are almost too deficient to lay eggs, but I think the overpopulation of coyotes plays a big factor too. Good shooting 2 for 2 is great. I always hunted over labs so even though the dog would be birdie they would surprise you when they flushed. A good pointer working a field is a really cool sight. Congrats.

Geez, we got another month to wait here out West. You guys are allowed to harvest hens up there? That's a BIG no-no out here! And let me get this straight; your birds up there are stupid? Must not be the same species, because the ones out here in CO, KS, and NE are smart as heck.

Everywhere I hunt if you kill a hen you labeled "bob the hen killer" and you can get in big trouble. Not saying I haven't ever hit one by accident in my 20 years of bird hunting but you never live it down when you do with the guys I hunt with. The pheasant I hunt are far from stupid! I have seen a rooster run in a badger hole or a jack rabbit hole to avoid a dog or hunter. I don't think I would like hunting stupid birds because it would take the fun out of it.

A couple guys asked if you can legally kill hens here?..... Yes, both male and female are legal because they are stocked birds much the same reason why they are not so bright. So no stigma to kill a hen here.

thinking about it......"Jeff the hen killer" sounds more like a compliment than an insult to me lol

So it's us eating the dopes or The coyotes, raccoons, hawks, eagles or owls eat them.

I call them dumb but I really should should say lacking in "instinct" they still have wings and legs and usually won't let you get too close.

as the wild ones have better" instinct" but aren't "smart"....running into a badger hole when you are a pheasant doesn't appear "smart" to me lol sounds like fast food for the badger to me secondly if birds were smart calling someone a "birdbrain" would be a compliment not an insult right?? lol

I had a stocked one up here squeeze himself into a hole in a stonewall once....didn't end well for him as the dog pulled him out by his tail feathers lol

Sad to say our domestic pheasant population is no more.

We do have domestic partridge and woodcock which are real fast and more skidish so they are more if a challenge.

The rabbit and snow show hare are also nice and fast. The end of the day a bad day of hunting or fishing beats a good day at work right?

Regards Jeff Ps this was me this morning....so no "Jeff the Hen Killer" today right??

Same here, killing a hen is a ride to jail...
No dumb Birds around here when I was hunting, they where waayyy ahead of what you were up to as soon as you hit the field.
Don't see Birds like you use too, all the hedge rows and fence line are gone now and nowhere for them to get cover and hide from the Coyotes and Feral Cats.
I do my best to help out with that though...
