You can find all of the items I listed at most WalMarts. They sometimes have the fire starter sticks in the Coleman brand... both work. Two will boil a pot of water with no other fuel. You do have a cheap small pot to heat water in right? Look at the grease pots in housewares if you don't like the little anodized Coleman pots in camping. The mountain house food cooks in the zipper pouch so the pot doesn't get dirty. You just need a spoon. They have lexan spoons and cups too.
Here is the beef stew. Tastes better than it looks.
The bowl was free with a frozen microwave breakfast from the grocery store.
Nice! thanks for the tips!!!

Here is a great resource for putting together a survivability kit that can handle almost any situation and onluy consists of 5-10 items. Each is well thought out and each item has at least 3 uses.

Oh well. Better safe than sorry. I'm heading to higher ground. Everyone stay safe and don't taken any chances.
My God, running out of whiskey in an emergency could be catastrophic!
Is it just me, or are these so called weathermen on TV acting like a bunch of media whores? The more I watch, the less I think much is going to happen as far as the world ending, or NYC being washed away. Yeah it's a big storm, and yes theres gong to be some damage. But people have been preparing for storms for ages, and in general we know what to do. It's a bad sign of the times that loosing power for a bit is a fate worse than death. I guess I'm too jaded to hear this "The sky is falling" so much from the media.
No TV and the radio I follow doesn't spend much time even on this weather system. We got some wind, light rain, cool outside, no arctic cold. There is a big potential for flooding in low coastal areas. I'm not on the coast. Yayyy.
44F, 3/4" of rain and gusts to 44.3 so far.
Haven't started to chain the buildings down......

Cancelled my trip down there, much to my wife's happinessbut I've already had to clear some roadway near my house of fallen branches, sizeable ones and it's not really that windy here yet, near Elmira NY...

If we're lucky, we'll lose power and won't have to watch political campaign commericials for days. . .
Wow, some of the trees in my back yard are getting thrown around. I fear some of the big ones are going to fall.

Holy crap. Just been browsing some weather forums and have to say that none of what I've seen and read seems extraordinarily overhyped now. Pressure is estimated at mid-900Mbs, that is low cat 2 territory, tropical storm force winds spanning somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 miles, and many piers are being destroyed and seawalls breached from MD to NY with the storm surge still 8 or so hours away from it's maximum. I really hope everyone stays safe up there... it isn't unmanly to retreat to an interior, windowless, room if it gets really bad.
We'll probably lose power. It's not a matter of "if" but "when" & for how long.I hope a tree doesn't fall on my car.I can't really afford a new one right now.
I just know the Rahway river is going to swallow everything up around it.I'm glad I'm not too close to it.
I wonder how GWs doing?I believe he's in Toms River,NJ.
That's NOT a good place to be right now.
