I got my Russian Sharpener today. I am really bummed, a large chunk of my order is missing, I am missing all the strops, blanks, adhesive spray, extra springs, and my second single clamp (I ordered two for large heavy thick blades). I emailed Paul, I'm sure it will be a few days before I hear back. There was a hole in the plastic bag it was shipped in but the case and all the main parts were wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap so I am not sure what exactly happened.

I am very bummed and won't be able to use it until the rest of the stuff gets here.

On the postive side it appears to be very well built, but I can't know for sure until I use it which won't be anytime soon...

I just got off the phone with Paul, he says he will ship out everything next week. He is a very nice guy. He didn't say exactly what happened but judging by how I received the package, it was either ripped open and stolen or just ripped open and some of the contents fell out...

How was yours packaged? Mine had all the parts individually bagged and then wrapped in heavy paper then packed into the green box which was just put into a cardboard box. It sounds like yours had a big plastic bag all around it.

I ordered the customized black case and everything that came in the case was wrapped in 4 layers of bubble wrap and I received all of the contents, everything else is what was missing and it looks like the package was damaged in transit and everything appears to have been lost that way.

This is not a review just some quick pics. I got my Russian sharpener in and half of the contents were lost in transit so I have no finishing stones leather strops etc. All I have is the kit itself and diamond stones. 80, 150, 240, 400, 800, 1200, 2000. The Russian sharpener is a best and worked fantastically!!! I sharpened a boom parang using just those stones to close to 15 DPS. In the middle, the angle cube read 15.45 and at both ends its read 14.95, close enough for me. I timed everything, I worked on 80 grit doing a reprofile which took 52 minutes, then the rest of the stones took right at 10 minutes. So I spent just over an hour on this blade.

This is the first time I put the sharpener together and the very first blade I sharpened. There was virtually no learning curve for me but I did have experience from the lasnky back in the day and the KME. The only learning curve was how to properly adjust the over travel stops (WHICH ARE AMAZING).

As far as the sharpener goes everything is ROCK SOLID AND no play and I am not even using the stiff springs, the dual clamps worked like a champ and the rotating was a please. The only negatives up front out side of having half my stuff disappear and waiting for replacements is the fact that I ordered it mid-October and received it early January. The other issue and it could be because I do not have everything set up properly is that angle indicator bar on the sharpener. I have a pic of the angle cube read out and the angle bar to show the difference.

The BP is scary sharp now and I can't wait to test it out!!! I can only imagine how nice the edges will get once I get the strops finishing stones and blanks for lapping film.

    Awesome!

If those are the Grinderman stones they are silicon carbide, not diamond. The diamond ones are 2 stones and they are double sided.

You can adjust the angle gauge on the arm by looking at the back of it on the pivot and loosening the screw then adjusting the pointer to where it should be.

The stones in your pictures are not the diamond stones.

Your both right. Those are both diamond stones made by the same company..."Venev Industrial Diamonds". 1 is double sided and 1 has backplate designed for guided sharpeners. The ones with the backplate will last longer because the diamond abrasive surface is thicker (3mm) compared to double sided stones (1mm per side). So Freehouse got a really good set. But you have the grit sizes wrong. The grits you actually have are 15,000 > 5,000 > 1,200 > 700 > 320 > 150 > 80. Also you have the 10/7 stone and 20/14 stones in the wrong order. Make sure you swap them in the lineup otherwise you will be sharpening in the wrong order.

Per the Venev website the approximate grit sizes are...

    Label ..............~grain size...............(Grit)

    250/200..........~ 250 microns..........(60)
    200/160..........~ 200 microns..........(80)
    160/125..........~ 150 microns..........(100)
    125/100..........~ 110 microns..........(120)
    100/80............~ 100 microns..........(150)
    50/40..............~ 45 microns...........(320)
    20/14..............~ 20 microns...........(700)
    10/7................~ 10 microns...........(1200)
    7/5..................~ 6 microns............(2500)
    3/2..................~ 3 microns............(5000)
    1/0..................~ 1 microns............(15000)

Ah, my apologies, Paul must have gotten in different diamond stones from the ones he was previously carrying. The only other stones he carried that looked like that were the Grinderman stones that are silicon carbide.

The stones are engraved by Venev. Notice how they have F in front of the grit size? That is because they are using the FEPA-F grit scale I believe which is different than the scale used in your list
    According to the scale:
    200/160 = F80 = 180 microns
    100/80 = F150 = 82 microns
    50/40 = F240 = 45 microns
    20/14 = If F400 = 17 microns
    10/7 = If F800 = 6.5 micron
    3/2 = F1200 = 3.0 micron = J4000 = ~ANSI 1150 or so,
    1/0 = F2000 = 1.20 micron = J8000 = ~Shapton 12000 or so

You can see the equivalents here http://web.archive.org/web/201510232...tchartrev1.png

I just received mine today. Everything was fine except a few issues:
    - One stone was cracked, and they were without blanks and cover as promised
    - Some scruffmarks here and there. The shiny strip around the base is plastic, and has a pretty large cut

    Good stuff, nice pictures.

My first mod I didn't drill all the way through the base, left about an 1/8 in the bottom. Works really well. I kept setting them down and then had to go looking for them, The knives are crazy sharp, like I can shave my arm in one pass....well, I am running out of hair on my arm need to figure out another way to test them. Stropping makes all the difference.

I've been looking at this system for a while. I'm trying to decide which double clamps would work best for me. I plan to sharpen anything from my good chef's knives to Busse's. So I'm looking for any feedback, experience, opinions or thoughts on the Filet Double Clamps or Conical Double Clamps vs the standard double clamp?

    Thanks!

Updated stone arm from January 2017:
    - The design is more lighweight because of decreased metal thickness. Weight 134g (old model 190g.)
    - Abrasive holder strength is increased due to more tight fit of supporting plate to arm sleeve
    - Solid abrasive holder clamps are made of aluminium alloy "Д16Т" and precisely oriented in axis direction using additional supporting plate made of polished stainless steel and stone arm sleeve
    - Abrasive is tighly fits to the stone arm sleeve giving improved control to abrasive movement during sharpening process.
Abrasive holder is equiped by simple and convenient reference plate for digital inclinometer.
    Better appearence and usability.
Convenient abrasive holder allows to reinstall different abrasives quickly.
Supporting plate along all an abrasive provides additional strength for abrasive holder and removes extra load to abrasive. So that the plate allows to mount fragil stones with no backing.
Distance between holder handle and abrasive stone not depends on stone length, it improves control on the abrasieve.
The updated stone arm includes two stopper rings and one of them serves as stone arm parking unit.
    - Abrasive holder bevels 45 degrees.
    - Abrasive holder clamping jaws: width 24mm, working height 5mm
    - 45 degrees groove height - 3mm
    - Min/Max abrasive size 145mm/200mm
