    I love this knife....

For the past 6 months or so I have been thinking I needed a 3.5. Then I got a 3.5 in from a customer to do a set of handles, as well as taking a 4.1 in on trade. So I had both side by side for awhile. I came to the conclusion I wasn't as enamored with the 3.5 as I thought I'd be. For that size knife I prefer a stout folder/flipper. But the old spec 4.1 was immediately a favorite. I simply have very little real use for anything larger than the 4.7. I have a 5.1 and have been tempted to jump on a 7/7, but it just wouldn't get as much use as I'd like (let's face it - I'm a suburban family man, and my outdoor days are pretty limited). Between the 4.7 and 5.1 (I think both are fantastic), I lean to the 4.7 because of the perfect handle ergonomics. When I got the old spec 4.1 it immediately spoke to me because of the compact size and blade shape. Also this whole time I have been eagerly awaiting the new 4.1s coming out and been hopeful for a flash Monday sale.

A week ago a new spec 4.1 came up on the Facebook page. I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach as I went back to the post about 12 times to stare at it. I figured out how to scrape together the cash and pounced on it, and man am I glad I did. What a knife!

This comparison will be to the 4.7. My old spec 4.1 is out of my possession for a little while getting some work done.

    So for overall impressions...

This knife is just slightly smaller than the new 4.7. At first it doesn't really seem visually smaller, but in hand you get an "oh... this is different." It is somehow an immediate difference to your muscle memory - I don't know how to describe it. The blade profile is the same, just shorter and not as tall from edge to spine. The stock material is also thinner (0.160" vs 0.175"). The handle, while it has the same new-spec GSO contours, is not quite as down-swept from the middle fastener to the back end. It has maybe 1/8" less down sweep. The belly of the knife is nearly as deep from top to bottom, but the handle is just a little smaller 'circumference'. More on the handle later.

The sheath is the same overall width and height - identical to my eye. The hole patterns line up on the sheath, so my guess is it is the same basic pattern, just a different mold.

Pictures below of the two blades are all taken with all of the jimping notches lined up along the spine. With the notches lined up, the front fastener hole is almost exactly aligned, so this seemed like a good way to index the two blades...

Picture with 4.1 sheath on top of the 4.7 sheath...

Handle of the 4.1 with slightly less downward sweep in the back half. Also notice the slightly shorter depth of the finger pocket to the spine of the 4.1.

4.7 blade is on top in this photo. The spine on the 4.1 has a little bit straighter line on the top, front half, without the same amount of hump as the 4.7.

    GSO 4.1 Balance Point

The GSO 4.1 balance point is a little deeper behind the first fastener hole than the 4.7. In these pictures I balanced each blade on top of a 5/16" hex- center punch. The balance point feels ever so slightly more into your hand on the 4.1 than the 4.7. Now if you asked me to feel this intuitively, I probably couldn't tell you one from the other (the 4.7 is heavier overall, but balance is hard to feel). But seeing the pictures and determining where it is, my brain is now convinced you can feel it. The 4.7 as we know has a great feel, and is pretty nimble, neutral balance. The 4.1 feels just a bit livelier.

The very tips of the blades in the picture here are lined up. You can see relative to the balance point there is just a little more handle forward on the 4.1.

The difference is like swinging a 20 gage O/U with 26" barrels compared to a 16 gage with 28" barrels. Hard to tell any real difference but it's there....

If anybody has one of the new D3V 4.1's they don't want or need cash let me know.

    GSO 4.1 Handle Shape

This is where the similarity to the original spec 4.1 comes in. The combination of finger pocket depth, stock thickness, profile and contours of the handle are reminiscent of the original 4.1. And yet, it is all new spec. The scales are still 0.375” at the center fastener, but have just a little less hourglass shape at the front and back fastener. That, coupled with the decrease sweep in the handle at the tail end gives it a straighter feel like the original 4.1. I like my original 4.1, but this is an upgrade in ergonomics for sure.

Nearly identical flare at the tail end, by my eye.

4.1 with a little less flair at the front end, again by my eye.

    GSO 4.1 Grip

The difference in the handle between the 4.1 and 4.7 is in the girth of the grip. With a fist grip, there is a gap between my fingertips and the palm of my hand on the 4.7. On the 4.1 my index finger is just about to touch.

    (I know - I should be a hand model!)

With various other grips, I get 2 fingers in contact with my palm on the 4.7 and 4 fingers in contact with the 4.1

Two Thumbs-Up... can we make this an emoji?

    MoS...

To my knowledge, there is only one out in the wild at the moment.

I think mine is the only one, and there isn't enough cash to pry this out of my hands!

Do you have an overall preference/favourite between the 4.1 and 4.7?

    Funny!

TR, VERY thorough comparison. Way better than I could have done. What a great resource this is until we all have our own.

The differences between the 4.1 and 4.7 are small but still enough so that both knives have their place
Guy was very smart to offer several models in this size range since it is by far the modt popular size

Purely a personal preference, but I'll grab the 4.1. That is only because I just am not a big-knife, fixed blade user. This 4.1 is just a nice modest size that I could actually see myself using/carrying. The ergonomics of the 4.7 make it an easy choice over the 5.1 (for me). This is just a step down in size that I prefer.

I completely agree. At first glance they seem close enough that you'd wonder why have both. They are just different enough that they both seem useful.

Does anyone know when the 4.1 design changed?
I ask because when I ordered, I went off the technical specs indicated on the Survive! website which states the 4.1 has a blade length of 4.43" and the 4.7 has a blade length of 4.75". Those specs are still currently up on the Survive! website.
Just judging by the pictures, there is no way the current 4.1 is 4.43".

Can someone shed some light on this? TRfromMT just curious if you could take a quick measurement?

TR or SURVIVE! would be the only ones with a definitive answer, but according to specs we're only talking about 0.32 of an inch.

I can understand how you want what you signed up for, but if the actual blade is off by a fraction of an inch, would it be a deal breaker for you?

I am out of the house for a few more hours, but I believe that 4.43" is accurate. The difference in blade length really isn't that much. I will get a measurement for you...

Lol. First cup of coffee and new 4.1 pictures for me, too. Thanks for the update Tony.

I'm not saying it would be a deal breaker, I'm just curious. I looks a lot closer in size than .32"
