Your profile doesn't indicate where you're from. . . .so. . . .it's kind of hard to be exact in how your local, state, and federal government's define "switchblade" and who is authorized to have them in their possession.

In the US, a "switchblade" is commonly defined as. . . . .

Any knife that has a blade that folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath, and that:

    (a) opens automatically by pressure applied to a button or other device located on the handle; or

    (b) opens or releases a blade from the handle or sheath by the force of gravity, inertia, or both
I'm not a lawyer, and don't play one on TV, but being a somewhat avid auto gatherer. . . .the knife that you're describing would fall into the above definition. Again, you will have to refer to the laws in your neck of the woods.

If you're from the US, here is a good starting point (scroll down to the lower portion of the page).

Since you're new, you're probably not aware of all the forums and sub-forum at BFC. There is a forum specifically designated for blade ware exchanges. It's called, "The Exchange Forum."

Within "The Exchange Forum" you'll find a sub-forum termed, "Knives, Wanted to Buy." You'll have better luck posting your request there.

Ummm no. The Kershaws are thus far legal because you push on the blade to open them, not on a button on the handle. Legal semantics. Also, they are biased towards being closed so they're not flick or gravity knives. It's an interesting loophole.

What was explained to you is not accurate, and it doesn't make any sort of sense.

My, this is becoming quite an issue, isn't it...I guess one must find their own way through the automatic knife maze. I'm still a novice (a mere ten years worth) so this is rather new for me but I hope all knife lovers are able to derive as much joy as possible from their passion for cutlery, even if they must also observe the law.

    Smokestack's two cents.

I belong to another board as a Global Moderator and we have the same things there as you have here , as Tim F. says there are many that come here to view what is said and by who , they may not always be friends . I am looking forward to being a good member here.

Just joined and read all this late. In Wyoming we have NO knife laws of any kind and you buy switchblades in the sporting goods store. I have crippled hands and appreciate being able to open a knife without help, so I am glad. Real knives, that is, not the <2-1/2" that are excepted in certain federal laws. Anyone from anywhere can buy one on the net, just search for automatics. I don't know why. I read the law posted on a site selling them, it said they and I can both be thrown in the hoosegow if they sell me (ship me) one, but when I ask, I get double talk, "I (me) certify that I am complying with all laws" etc, and that only I would get in trouble. That's not what the law on their own site says. It looks to me like the sort of thing everybody does for years and then some new DA or whoever decides to "make an example" of some one. Sad but true. If you don't like it, move to Wyoming, but hurry 'cause we're only letting 3 more in. Yes the law is stupid: I have a gun permit that allows me to carry concealed in most states now, but I still can't have an auto knife in most of them. Huh?

Hi y'all. Just now new to this forum. I got on to talk about knives but all that's on here is about laws. To each his own, I guess.

You are all posting in the wrong thread. This sticky is the managements way of saying don't discuss illegal stuff here on the forum. It will get us all in trouble. Go to the discussion forums and participate in the discussion of our hobby.
But, please read the next sticky, Ground rules first.

Never really thought about it. Not a bad idea, however. Thanks!
