No, it makes it a weapon, not an illegal/prohibited one.
There is a charge for carrying a weapon dangerous to the public peace, blah, blah, blah.
Then, there is the charge for possession/carry/use of a PROHIBITED weapon.
The prohibited weapon charge has its own (longer) sentence.

And don't go by what cops say as to what the law is...they often don't know. They have many other things to worry about than what every niggly little law is.
It's your responsibility to find out the laws to know where you stand, not the cops.

Just got my Benchmade LFTi 760 but, technically, its illegal because of its heavy blade it can be opened with centrifugal force. I suppose I could tighten the pivot until I have to manually pull the damn thing but that sucks. I found out the hard way about the laws and just how much some( not all) cops can be pricks. This guy grabbed my CRKT M16 and tried over and over flipping the damn thing until finally he was able to do it after about a half dozen goes and keeps it. Give me a break. Sorry but it is this kind of crap that makes people think police are just a$$holes.

I recently built and displayed a D-guard Bowie for the CKG show. In research it's legality I found this link to the Canadian Borders Protection. It list the restricted and prohibited knive along with exceptions which the d-guard falls under.
