    Buck Diamondback 471 questions...

    Hi guys, I got some diamondback 471's for ten bucks brand new in package and was wondering if this was a good price and what the original price was when they came out. The knife seems really nice except for the fact that it is Tiawanese.

    I'm happy with it (very sharp) and was just wondering what was the more preferred sheath for this one. The plastic or the nylon? The plastic one seems really cool to me but I also noticed there were nylon ones. Why the two sheaths? Which one was first and why did they change?

    p.s. how long does it take for the knife to stop smelling like fresh rubber?

    Bucks website says $30 but this knife is now discontinued.

    Nice one Rocinante... I haven't looked at em closely enough...If you wait for a bit I'll post any subtle variances in rubber density or diamond back geometry that I can find on either side. I'm sure there are some...even if I have to go to the microscopic level.

    Just for the record... my opinion on this knife is that (for ten bucks) it is a very good value. The design is okay from an aesthetic point of view...it's not as cool looking as the 119 but it does the job well and doesn't look half bad doing it.

    I found the plastic sheath to be pretty neat although it was a little hard to get the knife in and out. I think it needs to be used more often and loosen up...but I didn't get the feeling that the plastic sheath was ever going to fail in holding the knife in or anything. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and unintentionally broke my rule of only buying American made knives.

    It cut through a tomato, filleted chicken breasts and sliced a pineapple with no problem at all.

    Anyone find an answer why they changed the sheath design?

    I think there good knives,great for $10!I had neverhad a buck that wasn't US made,but had a friend that wanted me to sharpen his diamond back that he'd had for years and had cleaned three or four deer with, with out sharpining. Sharpend up same as the us models and left me impressed.

    Did he have the longer blade or the shorter one?

    I'm also impressed with what you get for 10 bucks.
