Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

it's a trear drop shaped cross-section, a tetch on the wide size compared to most hawks.

size varies about an 1/8" in length and width, so each hawk is an individual.

i think the mean eye size is about 1.125" in length by about 0.875" in width.

i think they probably made the eye so large, compared to a lot of classic hawks, because they wouldn't have to be so stringent on grain-aligned wood for the handles that way.

no idea really, just guessing.

i hope they don't eff up their line of hawks - i am working on a new head to offer the Investors ASAP, the "Glawk" - but i was hoping Cold Steel would keep it together on their hawks for at least a while longer.

I utterly trashed the handle on the first Trail Hawk I bought, teaching myself how to throw it into a cross-section of tree trunk. Initially, many of my throws hit butt-first, and knocked the head downwards on the handle, before I learned the proper throwing distance. Got to the point where the set screw just dug a long, deep trench as I would continually reset and re-tighten it. Then it wouldn't hold at all. Had to fab my own homemade "langettes", which were UGLY and ultimately ineffective. Got to where the head actually slid down the shaft and pressed my cheapie "langettes" into the handle. Even drilled the shaft below the head and inserted a bolt, secured with a nylon lock-nut. Shoulda put them on BEFORE trying to learn to toss it...

I ended up buying replacement handles, AND a new Trail Hawk. I won't throw this one, so the head will stay put when I chop wood with it. Also ordered a set of CS langettes, but I've lost the screws and thus haven't installed them. It's bound to help, if I place them correctly, but they're relatively thin, and I can see the head pressing them into the handle / shaft as well, if my throwing hasn't improved. And it hasn't - I only stick about 40% of my tosses.

Has anyone tried attaching a LANGETTE SET? On the page for the trail hawk on the cold steel website they are showing the set, ~$10, as an accessory. They are discontinuing the pole axe and looks like they have some extras.

I understand that some of the fitting of the head to the hart is done by a friction fit that changes over time, moves the head, so I do not know if these would be counter-productive.

no real mod's except cleaning up the eye and getting a proper fit on the shaft.... but it started with this "salping" and thinned 3/4th of it down on my new bow....


and it is pretty popular with the other gear...

There won't be anything extraordinary about this latest mod, with the exception of an exploration of Q's New Oil of Lemon Immersion & Moisturizing Processing (Q.N.O.L.I.M.P.) Tube for fire blackened/hardened hafts...so stay tuned...much much more to come fellas!

are you soaking the hafts in this stuff and then burning with the propane torch?

I received my 2 CS Trailhawks today from Knivesplus. Can't wait to get started modifying them. I will take my tine as I'm still not sure what direction to go. Lot's of great ideas here on this site. Thanks to all.
