Knife purchased

A week ago I bought a camillus, small folding knife about 4 inches overall.The badge on the side of the knife read"gran'pa" and on the end of the blade was new york, usa. Any information about it.Cheers tom

In the Schrade Collector's Forum, we noted these when they were first introduced in early 2005, I believe. There was a series of four or five folders and one fixed blade, all quite similar to the "Old Timer" knives of the defunct Schrade. I have the fixed blade, a Camillus CGP152 version of the Sharpfinger 152OT with the GranPa shield. I don't think they (folder patterns) were all shielded. The example I have was reviewed in the Schrade forum. This series was relatively short-lived and didn't make the ripple in the market hoped for by Camillus, though the quality from what I have seen was good.

That's the picture of the knife,second from the right. I find it an unusual small knife,like they have just taken a large knife and shrunk it. The blade is not very wide and this seems to give the impression or dimensions of a larger knife. It certainly feels impressive, solid and the blade sharp, with no movement and a satisfying closing "clunk". A very good small knife that found its way to Hobart, Tasmania. I have a schrade "old timer" made in the US and the camillus looks like a scale model in all proportions. Thats where the impression about the camillus comes from. I am glad someone mentioned the old timer as it solves the problem about the shape of the camillus. Thankyou, tom.

I am not sure how much of the history of the two companies you know, so please bear with me if I am repeating something you already know.

Both Camillus & Schrade were from the state of New York. The same family (the heirs of Albert Baer) owned both companies.

Schrade went out of business in July of 2004 and Camillus went out of business in February of this year.

Camillus made the knives in the Gran’pa series as sort of a tribute to Schrade. They reproduced (with some changes such as the handles) some of the most popular patterns from Schrade’s Old Timer series.
