I once "used" a knife to defend myself against myself. Just before I was about to buy another Fällkniven F1, I looked again at my two F1's, cut some cardboards with 'em and said to myself: I don't need another F1, especially not for the current price. I saved myself about 300 Euros as I was about to order the new one with white micarta handles.

Other than that, nope. I rarely carry knives except for when I am on survival trips. I've never had any confrontations of any sort for I had to use my knife.

Most people won't discuss such matters in detail on a public forum because of potential liability issues.

Or being ridiculed, a lot of people are of the belief that if you don't carry a gun then you just shouldn't try to defend yourself. To even think of pulling your edc in a random life or death situation makes you somehow unintelligent.

So when someone has their hands around your throat choking you to death your not going to do anything because you don't have a gun?

Most won't talk about it because it's a violent action kinda the same reason veterans don't talk about how they killed another person in war.

I stopped it from happening to me.

Let's just say if you remember the part in Crocodile Dundee where Hogan says, "That's not a knife; this is a knife," you'd get a good idea of what happened. On the same token that you don't bring a knife to a gun fight, you also don't bring a boxcutter to a knife fight.

I dissolved the situation before anything happened.

No, I'm saying that way too many people here give off that idea. It's not like I'm a tacticool collector either, for the past two weeks I've EDCed an Opinel or SAK.

And both of which could be used to save you life, just because its not tacticool does not mean that it will not work. Its not about right or wrong or the idea but about self preservation.

If you have to, I imagine you'll use any one of many tools that are available at the moment. A knife is one of them, so is a gun. Others could be beer bottles, heavy glass ashtrays, trashcan lids, bricks, chains, sticks, pen, and on and on. Anything is a waepon when you use it as one.

I've never had to use a knife in a defensive encounter and I'm glad!! My dad on the other hand used his Benchmade Griptillian to fend off an attacking animal. It was last summer; my family and I were at a cook out at a local park when out of nowhere we heard screams coming from the playground (about 50 yards away). What we observed was horrifying - a 3 year old girl getting attacked by a dog! By the time everyone processed what was happening, my dad was already sprinting to then scene! The mother of the little girl appeared to be doing everything she could to seize the attack, but no success. My dad immediately drew his knife from his left pocket and began to fend off the raging dog! Finally the dog stopped its attack and ran away limping. An ambulance, 4 cruisers and a news crew arrived shortly after the incident. The 3 year old was rushed to the hospital with lesions to her face, head and shoulder. Turns out - the dog was a pregnant female pit bull that escaped from the owner’s house that morning. The police found her lying against one of the parks pavilions, bleeding severely - she died in that spot, not long after they found her. My dad felt horrible about the dog but he knew he had to do what he did in order to save that little girl from getting killed...

    Good on your old man

In Iraq, we were trying to kill a rabid dog that was running around inside our compound. Our brass wouldn't authorize a gunshot, so we cornered it at night with a Surefire and we made quick work of it with my MT D/A Socom and an axe.

i would never consider using a knife as a weapon unless it was life or death. and in that situation, im probably incapacitated. i do enjoy beefy folders with g10, titanium, pocket clips, and 4 inch blades more than all other knives.

I can see why you got that impression, but in some states, it's real easy to get a concealed carry permit, and a decent gun doesn't have to cost that much.

If someone is going to carry a weapon specifically intended for self defense purposes, a gun is generally going to be more effective.

It's also probably faster and easier to learn to fire a pistol at close range than learn knife fighting.

Some people seem to be of the opinion that blowing a couple hundred bucks on a "defensive knife of your choice" makes them a killing machine. But if someone is mugged and just happens to have an EDC knife handy, it's a different thing entirely.

I go with the knife that opens and is ready for use the fastest. Now I have carried all kinds of folders, balis and OTF autos. Today, all I carry are waved knives. Getting a knife in hand and ready helps you a lot.

I would much rather have the others you listed over the trashcan lid... personal preference though
