    Axe Head Types

    Figured you guys might get a kick out of this. This is a scan from a 1929 Shapleigh Hardware catalog showing all the different types of axes they offered for sale. Lots of variety, as I presume the guys who had to use these things all day every day could really appreciate slight differences in design.

    Interesting how narrow the bits are on the double-bitted axes. I have used axes like that and also wider bit doubles, like my Gransfors. I imagine the narrow bits would come in handy when trying to get deep bite to fell a really large hardwood tree. I've never felled anything larger than about a foot in diameter and the Gransfors worked great.

    Interesting that they don't show my favorite, the Hudsons Bay pattern. The Rockaway is close, though.
