The rock is used to twist up in the hide. The inside of the hide is slick. You can grab the rock and hide together and get a lot of leverage.

I have made two hatchets but i cant find any pictures. The one in the photo is a plumb Boy Scout hatchet. My grandad gave it to me when i was 10 years old. It has cleaned a lot of game. The pocketknife in the photo is james todds he sent back for a fluff and buff a long time ago and i have just drug my feet.
It's nice to see you do test your AND your customers' knives
I really like those semi-skinners - especially the wood handled version looks great!
Best, Peter

I got word yesterday that Rick is starting on my Saddlehorn!!!!
We decided that I will post some progress pictures for everyone to see.
This is the 3 5/8 Saddlehorn pattern laying it out on 154cm.
Clamped the pattern to 154 and just drilled holes through it.
Cut out the steel on the band saw and now just profiling down to the line.
This is how Rick cuts the lock-up and choil on the blade.
Surface grind spring and blade making sure everything is flat and within .0002 before heat treat.
Cutting the long pull in the Saddlehorn. This machine started life as a deckel mill. Rick took three machine and made one. Know it's Menefee made.
After Rick recovers from Thanksgiving dinner and deer hunting this evening he will stamp his name and blade material in the blade and he will heat treat in a few days. Hell its easy anybody could do it (These are Rick's words not mine).
I hope everyone enjoys, now I just need to wait for the call!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.![]()

Hey, thanks for posting those, I think I spot a certain SB in Mammoth (fourth from the right). Keep them coming Rick, loving everyone.
Jim
Rob, thanks for showing us the WIP -- a 3 5/8" closed single blade saddlehorn is a sweet pattern to carry and use. One of my favorites.
Thanks Rob. I will keep pictures coming. I will cut out 5 more tomorrow that way i heat treat 1/2 dozen at a time.
