Just bought a Small Schrade Extreme Survival Fixed Knife w/ Driver Tool Set . It says the blade is made of 1070 steel. Is 1070 eny good. The new Schrade Extreme Survival fixed blade knife is a big knife with great utility. It features a single piece blade and handle made from 1070 stainless steel with a grey finish. The 5.6" blade is partially serrated and the 4.7" handle has diamond pattern knurling for a confident grip. Unscrewing the handle end reveals a driver tool with flat head (3/32", 5/32", 3/16"), Phillips (PH#0), Torx (10), and Allen (5/64") tips. The O-ring keeps moisture out of hollow handle when tightened appropriately. Includes a ballistic nylon sheath.
    Specifications:
    Overall Length: 10.3"
    Blade Length: 5.6"
Blade Material: 1070 High Carbon Steel
Weight: 14 oz. (w/ out sheath)
I thought for the price it might be cool to check out .

1070 is not stainless by any stretch, but it is good steel. Should be fairly tough. The edge holding is pretty much solely dependent on hardness, so the harder it is, the better it will hold its edge.

Gents, there are no "good" steels. There are no "bad" steels. There are only steels that are appropriate for a given usage and steels that are inappropriate for a given usage.

1070 is a pure carbon steel containing 0.7% carbon. There is a typo in the seller's description.
1070 is appropriate for a large rough use knife that will see lots of batoning and chopping.

It is less appropriate as a hunting and skinning knife, though it has been used for such in the past.
