Ontario Ranger S-7 3.75" thick Bush series Afgan models?

I was wondering if anybody has any experience with one yet. How does the Ontario rangers in S7 stack up to other S7 blades you've tried, How is the fit & finish, etc.

We don't see these massively thick shock steel knives at this price point very often and I was wondering how they turned out.

The Bush series is 3/16 inch thick and 5160 steel. The Mastiff, you must be talking about the Signature series.

Regarding Ontario's heat treat problems. If anyone has any info on problems (other than the one incident, Nutnfancy's failure to observe that his OKC RD was hitting the ground) with the Ranger series I'd like to see them. Justin is personally keeping an eye on the QC of the OKC Ranger Series and while there has been some fit and finish problems I have not seen anything on heat treat problems like with OKC RAT's and even the f&f problems seem to get sorted out as production progresses.

Just to make clear, Im not in any kind of loop, just an RK fan observing what's happening with the series as I was slightly concerned back when the announcement for OKC collaboration was made. But it's looking good and seems to get better, Justin seems to handle the Ranger series firmly.

It's called "Ontario RD6 Bush Signature Series 6" S7 0.375" Thick Blade" at one company that carries it. I know they are serial numbered, a batch of less than 200 made, and there are going between $130 and $170 depending on where you look for the 6 inch model.

I'm not usually the pry bar type knife buyer but this just caught my eye as it's been decades since I've seen a production company using S7.

RD-6 (Bush Series) .188" 5160
RD-6 (Signature Series) .375" S7 118 PCS made.

Afghan (Standard) .25" 5160
Afghan (Bush Series) .188" 5160
Afghan (Signature Series) S7 126 PCS made.

Afghan is around a 5.5" model without the pommel.

The signature Series was released last week so I'm sure that there aren't many reviews on them and I doubt that many will be used anyway as they were designed to be collectors.

I've followed the Ontario Rangers since the beginning of the project and have heard of a few handle fit issues but not any about the heat treat.

I've beat up more than one OKC Ranger without a problem.







They rip through wood and sheet metal no problem.

First the Signature series are mainly for collectors. The entire OKC Ranger line-up are designed for hardcore performance before fit and finish. They are tools that really aren't for everybody.

Also I'd like to know where the $130 prices are.

The only other production company that uses S7 steel is Scrap Yard Knife Works.

It's good stuff - I wonder what the rockwell hardness is on the Ranger pieces? In my limited experience, S7 holds a good edge [a little better than 1095 @ 58-60 RC) and is very resistant to chipping. It's a very tough steel - it's absolutely the most ideal steel for a "sharpened pry bar" type of application. It's lateral strength is unmatched. Maybe CPM-3V is better - it certainly dwarfs S7 in edge retention, but S7 still holds the high distinction of being the toughest, most impact resistant steel that you can make a knife out of.

But .375" thick?? Wonder how well it slices tomatoes?

Lyonta, I don't remember Justin mentioning S7 elsewhere in the OKC lineup other than the signature series which doesn't include the RD-9. Justin could obviously himself make you a RD-9 out of S7.

Also, Justin has forums over at the KF, you could ask him there if you want and make sure.

On knifeforums, Justin said that sig versions rd7 and rd9 will come sooner or later, as well as a RAK...He just won't say when or in which order. He went to Ontario this week.

There are several custom knifemakers here that work with S7. I had a chopper made from it, to my specs and design. I love it.
