    Thought the Antique Collection was released last month? According to the Buffalo Trace press release.

    It hasn't reached St. Louis yet, if it has been released. Here it usually comes in from the second week of October to the beginning of November.

    I just read this entire thread and there are some very experienced bourbon drinkers here on BF! Do you guys have any advice for the inexperienced bourbon drinker?

    Starter, intermediate, and advanced brands. Ice, water, neat, etc?

    I've had a whiskey sour or two when out and about, but I would like to get into some sipping when I'm at home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    My advice is to start with four bottles, less than $100 total:

    George Dickel No. 12 (white label), not bourbon because it comes from Tennessee, low rye recipe, about $20;
    W.L. Weller 12 yr. old, a wheated bourbon with some wonderful age and sweetness, about $22;
    Elijah Craig 12 yr. old, a medium rye bourbon with lots of oak influence, about $25;
    Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel, a higher rye bourbon with citrus influence and great balance, about $28.

    These four are all exceptional for the money, and will give you an immediate education in the different flavors of bourbon. If you don't really like one of these four, then bourbon is not for you. Try them at room temperature with a little water added to lower the "burn" but still let you taste the different components so that you will learn what you like. Whiskey over ice changes the flavor so much that you won't learn the complex and interesting flavors which make bourbon so special.

    ENJOY!!

    I'm a happy man!
    Just got home with these. I hate to admit I stopped at another store and got another Stagg and Weller. Call me a hog, but I know I'll enjoy having them a few months down the road. Get em while you can, the allocations are much smaller than last year for every shop I spoke with. Pappy is really gonna be tough to get.

    Never say never!!!

    Here is what I was doing this weekend.

    Here is what I brought back. Some are duplicates of bottles I have in my cache already but I buy certain bottles every time I see them regardless of how many I already have.

    Back row / left to right - Rittenhouse Rye - Four Roses Single Barrel - Elmer T. Lee - Rittenhouse Rye
    Front row / left to right - Jefferson's Presidential 18 yr. - Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit - Col. Taylor "Tornado Survivor"

    My liver is screaming for mercy after this weekend.

    Follow what black mamba says post #244. I am lucky I live in Newport Ky. All the big liquor stores select their own barrels from the distilleries. I had a bottle of Ancient Age 10 yr old for around $19, that was awesome. My other favorite is 1792.

    I bought these two this past July when I went through KY.

    The white label 6 yr old Heaven Hill BIB is simply the best value I have ever found in Bourbon.
    There are only a couple of labels under $30 a fifth that are any better to my palate, and those are only slightly better.
    And . . . this bottle was just $11.99 for a full liter. Incredible!

    The other bottle is Ezra B 12 yr old single barrel at 99 proof. I bought this at the Heaven Hill distillery for around $28.
    This is one of the few under $30 that is better than the Old Style above. It has the complexity of Rock Hill Farms and
    the intense wood resin of Elijah Craig 12 yr old, for a great dry finish. Truly a superior sipping whiskey.

    If you can find either of these . . . . get them right away!!

    Okay I bought the Ezra B. It took a splash of branch water to calm it down. Very good thanks for the tip. Now this was $33 at the liquor store but then I think the Elijah Craig is about $21 to $25. Kentucky started charging sales tax on Bourbon in the last year.
