Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to find the WT rye next time I go to the liquor store.

I'd have to guess it would fall under the "you get what you pay for" banner.

It is what it is. For the price I think it is a good value. I like it better than anything else with "Jim Beam" on the label. It's a good mixer and can be enjoyed all by itself sometimes.

I just picked up a bottle of Thomas H Handy Rye last night. This stuff is 128.6 proof! It is barrel proof and unfiltered so there is some sediment in the bottle. Can't wait to crack this open and give it a try.

    +1.

I have a shopping list for the next time I go to H'burg (my company's main office is there). It involves going to Cabela's, at least one liquor store, and driving down to Chambersburg to check out J.M. Boswell's for pipes.

You're going to spoil yourself. If I was faced with a "stranded on an island" scenario, Thomas H Handy would be the rye I would choose. It is sweeter than expected and oh so smooth. Do a side-by-side comparison...one glass neat and the other with an ice cube or two. Both are great but I very much prefer it neat.

I should mention I did find a Buffalo Trace product that I've never seen before at a local store - E.H. Taylor. They had two versions of it, a regular version, and one rescued from a warehouse that was destroyed by a tornado. Supposedly barrels of the second version were left outside while the warehouse was being rebuilt, resulting in a different flavor profile. This stuff isn't cheap, so I'm still debating whether I should buy it.

Take a look at the Pa Wine and Spirits website. You can order whiskey (sometimes hard to find stuff) through their site and pick it up in one of the stores. I've done this a few times and it works out pretty good. Drop me a message next time you're in Harrisburg.

I have a bottle of this and it is some good stuff. The price I have seen is about $72 and I would buy it again around that price.

Big fan of that Van Winkle 12. Have a couple bottles on hand, along with Blantons. Two of my favorites. Don't mind Woodford in my Old Fashion, but has anyone tried the new Double Oaked?

I meant to ask this question before. Which bottle do you grab when you don't want to make a choice about what to drink? Mine would be Wild Turkey 101. It's just good whiskey.

That's my stand-by as well. It's always good and reasonably priced.

Used to always get Wild Turkey 101 but more often now I go for Weller Special Reserve. Cheaper and I actually like it a bit better.

My go to EDD (Every Day Dram) is Elijah Craig 12, drunk neat only. I can get it locally for $42 for a 1.75 L bottle. If it was the only whiskey in the world, I'd be happy.

In the summer, when I'm thirsty and want bourbon on ice, Old Fitzgerald BIB is darn hard to beat for $14 a fifth.

Something that has been getting traction of late is "white dog" which is unaged bourbon. Sounds nasty, but I tried some of the 126 proof Buffalo Trace white dog last weekend and IMO, if you want some white grain liquor, this stuff is better than most of the major vodkas that I have had. It actually has flavor to it. As far as the aged stuff goes, the best that I have ever had was the 19 year old Weller which was released in 2001 as the first of the "antique" series that comes in the tall skinny bottle like the Pappy Van Winkle 15 and 22 year old and William Larue Weller 18 year old. It was better than the current 18 year old Weller and at about $40 a bottle, no more and maybe less than Bookers at the time and a hell of a lot cheaper than the $200 or so they get for a bottle of the 22 year old Van Winkle today. My regular go to bourbons are Makers Mark if I want wheated whiskey and Woodford if I want a bit of rye in the mash bill.
