Sharpening Beckers

Hi,

Apart from being 1095 steel, one of the great things about much of the Becker line is that the edges are not too thick. This makes for a knife that is easy to sharpen and cuts well.

I have had good success with a plain combo stone for sharpening these, as well as diamond stones or sandpaper.

If you like shiny or sharp edges on Beckers, post up some pics.

Here is my BK-11 after a quick touchup on some 2100g sandpaper.

That's a shiny edge. You gonna use it on anything, or is it just for lookin' at?

It's already gone...

It was actually sharp already, and took all of 2 minutes to shine up like that. Later I spent a bit of time thinning the bevels out a bit, and it was gone...

I'm thinking about stripping my BK14 and polishing the blade up on it, but I don't know. One thing about that stripper that I bought, from the time you decide to stripped metal is about 10 minutes. I want to get a HS buffer to REALLY make mirrors out of them.

I was telling Ethan yesterday, when I get back from my outings, I take some 000 steel wool and Ballistol to clean them up, they get shiny, but not mirror.

I like shiny.

No patina. I don't like the look of a forced patina, and I take steel wool to my blades to clean, so not much chance to build a natural patina. Moose

I have done a nice polish on the spines of knives using a drill press and a $10 Ryobi polishing kit. I guess I did a Kershaw Shallot once with it, and it turned out well.

It doesn't work at all when you do it with a cordless drill, it just doesn't have enough speed.

You could also work your way up through sandpapers, the 2K for autobody give a nice soft glow... it is mirrorlike, just not so hard edged on the reflections.
