Does anyone know of any decent retail knife stores in Mass or Rhode Island?

My 15 year old nephew wants me to take him to look at some knives in person, but I haven't been able to locate much more than shopping center-based cutlery stores, and I have only purchased knives through the internet.

You'd be fortunate to find even mall cutlery stores at this point.
Both the store in Providence Place and Cove Cutlery out toward Westerly have closed.

The same mall store is still doing business, but only in their Boston (Fanueil Hall) location.

I actually used to work at the one in Providence Place, if you're talking about On The Edge. I didn't know they'd closed.

I'm glad Dave still has the Boston store open. It's sad that ignorance of quality knives on the general public's part coupled with the undercutting at WalMart and other big stores is ultimately killing knife stores in well-populated areas. Even where I live now, most people drive 40 minutes to WalMart to buy a Buck 110 instead of the 5 minutes to the local gun store.

OP: Good luck with your hunt and I'll ask around for ya.

I seem to remember a cutlery store in Quincy Market a few years ago, but I don't know how good it is, or if it is even still there.

Ure Outfitters in Hope Valley, RI is a great outdoors shop (my favorite) with a good knife selection, but they are a little pricey. Lots of Benchmade, Muela, Buck, etc. This is a great shop.

North Cove Outifitters in Old Saybrook, CT also has a good knife selection, but at yuppie prices.

There is a big Cabelas in East Hartford, CT which might be worth the longer drive.

I believe you are thinking of On The Edge as well. There may have been a Chesapeake Knife and Tool there earlier, I know there used to be one somewhere in Boston, maybe still is. On The Edge is great, the staff I worked with were pretty knowledgeable. Dave tries to carry lots of good stuff from a variety of manufacturers and his prices were average for a brick and mortar retail store. Found the website: http://www.ontheedgecutlery.com/

Chesapeake is ok, if they still exsist, I thought their selection was a bit lacking though.

Cabelas will charge MSRP on most things, or just under it. If you do want to drive out here and there is something you want to make sure they have I can stop by and check before you drive all the way out here. I live down the road from it.

Cove Cutlery closed? knowledgeable and amazing selection. Pvk.com closed it's brick store about 10 yrs ago, Amherst Drop Zone closed about 5ish, I tried to stop into Providence Place for On the Edge closed too. So after that sad state of Ma's here's what I know.

Stoddard's which had two places in Boston and one in Chestnut Hill Mall, but now only seems to have place in Newton (ahh a bright light and new knife shop to visit). They had at one point Customs, Randall's, WH, CRK, SAK, and an amazing Kitchen Cutlery selection. But, who knows know. If I get there I'll report back.

On the Edge in Faneuil Mall good selection (production and some nice high end stuff). I found the prices high (MSRPish).

Basspro is a good stop for a good mixed bag of low to Mid level production.

Sawyer Cutlery in Hanover great prices (internet competitive) and a good selection of production (ask if they have anything new in...), WH's, occasional customs, and Kitchen stuff. Until I see what Stoddard's turns up, this is my best recommendation.

More of a CT thing, but the Victorinox store in Westfarms mall, has a phenominal selection of knives. I was most impressed with their Spydies and Benchmades, lots of rare discontinued models, including a blue yojimbo, a chinook, the wenger hunter models, a bunch of gold class BMs and some disco'd ones I wasn't familiar with, just an all around great selection of the rarer ones. Prices seemed to be MSRP or slightly less, but for what some of those are going for these days thats a good deal. I'll probably go back for a Yojimbo or p'kal next paycheck.

Figured I'd give you guys in the general area a heads up

Drive a little further to Kittery trading post in Kittery Maine. About an hour(ish) drive from Saugus, MA. Great selection of knives and they also carry a lot of nice used knives/trade-ins.

There is one store in Middletown, Rhode Island that has a good selection of Spyderco, Benchmade and Lone Wold Knives. The place is called Watches, Etc along East Main Road acroos Starbucks. The price is around MSRP though but if you are looking for some good discontinued and numbered Spyderco, it is the place. By the way, Middletown is between Newport and Portsmouth, RI. I heard of Sawyers Cutlery in Hingham, MA but did not have the chance to go there. Also, the only below MSRP knife I found at the store is a Benchmade mini-Skirmish priced $40 below the MSRP.

I know this thread has been dead a while but I thought I'd update with some locations to find good knives. The Army Barracks has stores in Newington,CT, West Springfield,MA, Boston,MA, Saugus,MA, Salem,MA, Salem, NH, North Conway, NH, and Scarborough,ME. They usually carry Spyderco, Cold Steel, CRKT, S&W, SOG, Ka-Bar, Boker, Benchmade, Leatherman, Gerber and Buck for decent brands. They carry cheap Master stuff too if you're just looking for a throw away.

Go to the Benchmade website and type in your zip code and how many miles you want to go away into the dealer locator. The stores i know of are pretty good but sawyers cutlery in Hanover ma has really good prices and a good selection, I went there yesterday and they will be getting the new year stock of knives in two weeks. Others are the Natick Outdoor Store in Natick Mass they have a good selection of Benchmades and lesser brands. In Smithfield RI there is the Smithfield Smoke Shop and they have a awesome selection knives from Benchmade to spyderco but there prices are only 20% below msrp. There are others but the dealer locator is your best bet to find good brands and more often than not the stores with one brand on the locator have others in the store.

smithfield smoke shop is a great shop, they have the full benchmade line and some good spyderco's and protech's. the owner has a display of his own private collection of customs too which is pretty impressive and worth the trip alone

check out Cabela's they have a selection there too it's kind of a small selection if I can remember correctly mostly benchmade CRKT and buck's. I tried to search for some nice high end or mid-tech knives but was unable to find any in the area I'm from Springfield/Boston. I wouldn't even mind taking a hour ish drive if there was a good selection of striders/ Chris Reeve's. But unfortunately none. have to play the trial and error with mail order.
