    Here's a toy horse I'm working on.

    And a toy dragon.

I'll give the toys a few coats of salad bowl finish, then some acrylic paints and finally a coat of shellac.

There is a lot of talent in here.
Would it be taboo to say "Dremel"?

No, but I personally don't consider it whittling unless you are using a knife. I call Dremel work "sculpting".

I like to think of whittling as one knife, one piece of wood, and two hands. Anything else, such as a vice or power tools, is woodcarving. It might be nitpicking, but whittling is something more basic.

PS: Lutejones, that little guy looks great!

I can't believe it has taken me this long to find the whittling thread. There is some amazing talent here. My current project is a three link chain out maple for my baby niece to play with. My wife took this picture while I was working on it. I'll post another picture when I'm done.

    Hey folks,
These days I'm trying to do a little doctor as a present to my father in law who is a pediatrist.
It's made in European bass wood, which seems harder than its American cousin, I say that based on some videos I've seen.
It's made from a square block and only with the pen blade of a Boker Barlow.
Tell me what you thinks please because it's not finished yet and I'm a little stuck with the details,

Sorry for the crapy phone pictures, but I'm not at home and don't have my camera

It looks very good to me, but I'll let those with artistic talent give suggestions for how to proceed from there.

Ok the little doctor Is finished
I now know what was the problem, I cut the wood in the wrong direction so I ended up with a pain in the a$$ because if you look closely at the figure you'll see it. (I don't know the words) but both sides of the figures are with the grain on the wrong direction, I mean instead of cutting the block along the grain I cut it side by side.
Anyway it ended up looking quite nice, a little dirty in some of the detail but nice after all.
No more talk, now some pictures:

I'm new to whittling and wanted to share a two projects I'm working on.

This one has been going for a while it my first attempt at something (a wolf)

and here it was as of last night, since this pic its been detailed a little more in the neck, back legs as well as thinned out in the waist.

And for a second project; This is a chunk of alabaster that was given to me by an office-mate. I have decided i wanted to carve a celtic cross to wear. Though Im at work and so am not very far. My fellow IT workers dont appreciate me carving on the job .

You can kind of see the cross drawn on the stone and barely see my start of carving it out on the top left.

Thanks to all who shared their time and effort.

John G, what kind of wood is the dragon carved from? maybe I just over looked it.

    Hey guys,
I'm glad this thread is getting busy again, I'll show you the last figures I've done I'm the last few weeks.
An old sailor, a churro's maker, hockey player and an elegant man.

Now I'm making a little pirate but I don't know what to do with the beard, so it's waiting until I figure it out

I really like this new hobby
    See you

Not much worthy of posting other that to say eucalyptus is wild stuff to carve. It smells fantastic and has some good properties for fans of whittling found natural materials, though I am not sure how it will age.

This very basic spirit took about 2 minutes to whittle with a 4 inch Spyderco Military. Not exactly my first choice for carving, but it was in my pocket when I found the stick

Thanks. I have done lots of carving and that is my M.O. (only use the knife I am carrying at the time), I really don't even have a knife that most would say is a proper carving knife. It's all about having fun
