Thread: Whatcha whittlin' these days?

  1. #141
That chain is just insane. I don't think I would have the patience...
What do you do if one link cracks? Do you start over or cheat and glue it together?

Interesting how the four corner pieces look that different due to the grain direction or whatever-you-call-it. I guess they are especially fragile.

I admit I cheated on that one. I used a coping saw for a couple of cuts, and several links have been glued at one end. One of the cross grain links is glued in two places, it was the only one that had a piece broken clear out. You're right about them being extra fragile, which is why they didn't get thinned down as much as the rest.

i just started whittling a ball in a box from a branch of oak i found in the yard. i was using my spyderco delica. i dont think the combo is going to work. the oak is pretty hard to carve and the delica is pretty big to be a carver. lol

These candlesticks are carved from some old industrial textile spools.

Hey guys, my last one on three different steps:
    Pattern rough out:

    Begining with the detail:

    Finished without cleaning and oil

The GEC whittler is a great improvement because it has the two blades pen an straight edge and before I whittled with a case 6318pu modified with only wharncliff.
    See you mates
    The works showed are beautiful

As always, very nice work mateo.
I have to agree, the courthouse whittler is a joy to use.

It was about time I whittled something again, so I sat down in the woods and relaxed.

I'm surprised that none of the claws broke off. I hate photos, they emphasize all the imperfections

I only had the White Owl in my pocket, but it worked quite well.

The weather today was perfect. Clear sky, not too hot, and you could see all the way to the alps.

    Take care

    Good evening gents:
at first i felt too embarrassed to post one of my pictures here, but im just starting out with the carving scene, and you have to learn to crawl before you can walk.

pepper shaker i made for mom

And sturzi i was on the fence about buying a courthouse whittler, but after seeing how beautiful yours is in action i just have to have one

My latest whittling project, before and after:

Aww John, now I'm almost ashamed to post this. Looks like you're quite fond of your razor, it sure looks nice.

My first attempt at a chain, it took me almost 6 hours. There should have been four rings, but the second one broke. The cross-grained sides sure are fragile

Wow, I just found this thread, and you have all inspired me so much, I had to order a new GEC geppetto whittler just to try some of these out!

I just finished staining and shellacking these linked hearts. I think the effect of two different colored hearts is pretty cool.

    That's really funny!

Wow, what a thread. I just checked it again for the first time in a while, and am re-inspired.

Among other considerations, nothing motivates me to try to improve my sharpening skills more than whittling with blades I previously thought were "sharp enough."

Lutejones, I always enjoy seeing your little people.

John G, cool razor knife. What is it? Also, do you cut (with a saw?) the wood you then whittle into a ball-in-a-box/chain...?

    Thanks, Pertinux!

The Razor is from Case. I like how it looks, and it's great for whittling. I keep the razor blade hair-popping sharp, and the pen blade a little toothy.

For my box-in-cage with short chain, I started with a block of basswood, then carved away until I had the "long plus sign" seen in this pic. It takes a while, but it's not as delicate as the later work.

(also, here's a step-by-step post on this project: Cube-in-cage with short chain )

In the interest of keeping this thread alive, here's some simple little spike trolls! They're great projects for beginners, but fun for more experienced whittlers too. They help keep your calluses strong while giving you a break from your more complex whittlins.
