A very cool sighting earlier today.

I was over at my parent's place earlier this evening. Their neighborhood is completely overrun with deer. On the ride into their neighborhood I spotted a bunch of does, maybe seven or eight of em', on both sides of the road. I turned the corner and I saw a very stout looking eight point typical. It was a great looking deer. Then something else caught my eye. For a moment I thought it was a little black and white pygmy goat, but it turned out to be a little piebald fawn that appeared to be hanging out with the buck. I stopped in the middle of the road and tried to get a picture with my phone but I was too slow. The fawn almost looked like a dwarf of some sort, no bigger than a normal sized new-born. It hopped into some brush and the buck went sniffing after it. It was the coolest little fawn that I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of them.

I wish I had some photos to post but I don't. If you are curious about this little fawn just do a Google image search for piebald whitetail fawn. This one was very dark and white. Very cool.

I saw a piebald deer a few years ago. My son in law told me he had seen it in my back pasture and I didn't believe him. I warned him not to shoot the neighbor's calf or goat. I found the deer a few days later and tagged him myself. I had the hide tanned. It is still boxed up from my last move, so I can't show a picture of it. Tennessee considers them fair game, but true albinos are protected (I am not sure of the reasoning for that). FWIW, they taste the same as normally colored deer.

nice catch (photo). they are slightly rare. i have seen an albino doe but she was across the lake in another field. stuck out like a sore thumb. i dont think they are protected here in NC. i have no idea on why they would be in our sister state of Tenn

Beautiful pictures of that piebald...I've seen just one of those in my hunting excursions....I've also seen 3 albinos...supposedly even rarer....I've never seen one of these though... an all black deer...the rarest of all pigmentation phases. My father-in-law's buddy sent me these pics...enjoy!

i have NEVER heard of a black white tail deer. you have pics to prove it.. what a treat man. thanks a ton for the pics

The deer in this area are totally unafraid of people and even cars. Whenever I see a good buck I stop my car, roll down my window, and have a staring contest with some snorts and grunts. I was less than 12-15 feet from that buck yesterday. I had a sudden urge to drop him in his tracks. He was very healthy and tasty looking. On the other hand, I wanted to jump out and grab the little fawn and give it hugs. That thing was adorable. The neighborhood over there is a great place to observe and study whitetail behavior up close.

I had dinner with my parents tonight and I mentioned the fawn to my mom. She said she's seen it too. Right near the same spot where I saw him. I will be at their place for like a week before heading west so I'll keep my eyes peeled and try to get some photos.

Melanistic deer are more rare than albinos. Albinos lack pigment (will have red eyes and pink noses/skin, otherwise are considered piebalds) and melanistics have way too much pigment.
