    Heat Treating

    There has been some interest in heat treating single blades or very small batches. I've decided to try it for a while to see how it works out. The interest seems to be mostly in oil hardening steels so thats what I'll concentrate on. The equipment I use is a Sugar Creek electric kiln, Mcmaster-Carr 11 second quench oil, & Parks #50 quench oil. Here are the specifics;

    1. Maximum blade length = 12".
    2. $10 per blade plus return shipping. Shipping is $6 minimum.
    3. Due to many variables I cannot guarantee straightness. (if its ground evenly and not too thin it should be fine)
    4. I only accept CASH as payment.
    5. Please ship by USPS. (UPS & Fedex give poor service in my area)
    6. Include a note with steel type, target hardness, name, address, phone number, & email address.

    This info is for oil hardening steels only. You're better off sending air hardening stuff to Bos or Peters.

    If I've left anything out or you have a question email me or give me a call. Thanks,

    Darrin

    I've got some ATS34 stock on the way that'll need treatment when I'm done grinding it... Probably looking at a matching pair of boot/neck knives (6" OAL), and a larger bowie (10"-12" OAL). Sound like something you'd be interested in? (Assuming you're still doing this, that is.)

    I just bought a new hardness tester and have it up and operating. I can now guarantee that your blades will be within a point (probably closer) of your target hardness.

    Darrin, First thanks for offering this service for guys doing smaller runs - much appreciated.
    Would you be able to treat a larger knife chopper) where the blade is about 8"x2" and the OAL is close to 20"?
    What about integral tomahawks?
    Thanks
