Here is a quick video showing the use of the spine of one of my survival tin knives to scrape some magnesium and strike a ferro rod:

Nice video Allen,I gave my unscaled tin knife away for my 1000th post giveaway,but still have my scaled one.
You might try holding the knife right above the shavings & pulling the rod towards you.There's less chance of you disturbing the shavings that way & the sparks are more concentrated towards them also.Just my 2 cents.

That probably would work better. I was kind of in an odd position with everything up on a rail on my deck which put me doing it up high and to the side so the camera could see.
