    Scouting knives

    Good evening, everybody.
For a temporary hobby project I am photographing and recording all of the knives and bladed items in the New Mexico Scouting Museum here in Raton. The idea is to eventually submit photos of each item to website, Scoutknives.net, an online photographic reference.

The project is only midway completed, at best, but I thought you guys might want to see some of the more interesting specimens so far.

The handles on this are stunning, from the Girl Scouts of America:

For the younger girls, Brownie Scouts. I like the slogan on the knife's opposite handle:

Not an official Scout knife, just a generic scout pattern knife, but some interesting celluloid.

Can't imagine how long a Scout would have to carry this in their pocket to wear down the emblem this much! (knife is a Remington)

That's great! Scout pattern knives are my favorites. Ever since my cousin had his Cub Scout knife back in the late 60's I've loved them. I'm building up a small collection of them as I go along.

Nice job on the photos. They are extremely crisp and clear and show great detail.

Love it. I bought one of those for my son when he was born. The handle and sheath were unfinished, so when he gets a bit older we'll have a nice father-son project.

    Great knives.

Thank you very much. There's one change I had to make recently, stop using the manual focus; the camera's computer sees better than I can.

Another thing that I think helps, instead of uploading 5mb jpegs and letting Photobucket deal with them, I've begun resizing the images before uploading.

I just aquired this one recently. It's old, but where I thought there was pitting and heavy stains, there was just an oxidized surface. This thing is still ready to work, and it does get put in my sheath and used at work (very reasonably I might add, it gets alot of respect from me). It looks much better now that it is regularly opening beer bottles, cutting things and reaming out holes, all that ugly brown spotting is getting worn off, and the bolsters are smooth steel again.

Kind sir, would you be able to tell us who manufactures the current official girl scout knife? The one they can order through their catalog?

    Great thread!

Scout knives will always hold a very special place in my heart. Lots of great memories in that pattern from long ago.

I'm enjoying this thread tremendously! Great images too! I was a scout myself, so this thread is surely connecting with me. I've been meaning to turn the house upside down to try and find my old Cub Scout knife. I had an old Imperial at one time too.

This knife was made by P.Holmberg of Eskilstuna Sweden. Perhaps a souvenir from the second World Rover Moot in Ingaro 1935.

Sadly, no. I have no idea who makes the current Girl Scout Knives.

Both of the Girl Scout knives posted above are Kutmaster. Other Girl Scout knives in the museum's collection are Utica, Imperial, and Geo Schrade.

The majority of the official Boy Scouts of America knives are Camillus. Other brands include Victorinox, Buck, Case, New York Knife Company, Remington, Imperial, and Ulster.

I even have two that are Unknown - the knives are sealed in BSA clampacks with no mention on the packaging as to who made them. I think one is Imperial, and the other might be Camillus. Hopefully when I submit the photos to the scout knife website, the owner there will know on which page to categorize them.

I love that Swedish scout knife.

I always wanted the 'all steel' scout knife when I was younger. Think it was a western. Maybe this thread is my que to make sure that my boys get one of their own.

That's my favorite Scout pattern, the infamous demo knife. Most were made by Camillus, I have one from Imperial and Ontario.
Stay away from the ontario ones.
