For the knife throwing club at New Mexico Tech, we use about 6inch thick rounds and three lagbolts, In a triangle and no two bolts are in a veritcal line with eachother. The additional thickness and bolt arrangement allows the logs to take more throws without splittling.
Hopefully this picture shows the damage they can take without splitting. There are knives in the target but it was also hit with tomahawks multiple times.
Note that log did split after 100s maybe even 1000s of throws but it lasted months.
