How do you attach your logs to your plywood for throwing.

Hey there everyone, I throw knives and tomahawks and i've been checking out videos on youtube of throwers to. I notice that some of them have plywood backstops with huge 4" thick log ends. I'm curious as to how you attach those to your plywood. I've tried screwing them in from behind but it ended up weakening the log and when i threw my tomahawk at the log it ended up splitting it. Any help would me most appriciated.

For the knife throwing club at New Mexico Tech, we use about 6inch thick rounds and three lagbolts, In a triangle and no two bolts are in a veritcal line with eachother. The additional thickness and bolt arrangement allows the logs to take more throws without splittling.

Hopefully this picture shows the damage they can take without splitting. There are knives in the target but it was also hit with tomahawks multiple times.

Note that log did split after 100s maybe even 1000s of throws but it lasted months.

There is also a good chance the mods will move this to the knife throwing subforum. You will probably get more help there.

I would say try using more screws , but of smaller diameter .

Can you screw from behind the plywood?

Hey that sounds like a good idea. Oh and I did put this on the knife throwing section but apparently it's not as popular and I never got any answers. Reek, I did screw them from behind. Maybe it was just the size of the screw(to small i'm guessing, about 3 inches but just the typical screw) and the logs I used were only about 9" in Diameter. I don't know where I can get any ginormous log ends. And since i'm way north a lot of our wood is hardwood. :P I heard that cottonwood is the best kind to use. OH and sorry the picture didn't go through town, i'd really like to see it though.

Wind an iron wire around your log ends

I cut my log ends at least 6" thick and screw them from the back,but i use a 2x12" behind the log end[3 1/2" deck screw and i sink it 1/4" or so into the 2x12"]...I like hickory or white oak...You could then use the plywood
as a backstop behind the 2x12"...I find though i'd rather not have a backstop cause if i miss without one i have to walk to get it, it makes me focus better..
I wear them out to nothing before they split usually.

Use lag bolts from the rear to secure the log to the back stop. Get rid of the plywood and use 2X 8 pine lumber. It is a little expensive, but the will not get the bounce that you will get with plywood and it will last a long time.
