Trail comforts?

Crazy Creek chair...great around camp in the evening, and it functions as a fantastic "door mat" for my tent.

I also like some sort of camp shoes; lately I have been enjoying Sanuks. They're not all that lightweight, but they squish down and it's luxurious to slip them on while my boots dry out after a long day on the trail.

I'd recommend trying softsoled moccasins-Minnetonka is good. They cost about 35 dollars and are great evening/campsite shoes. They pack very flat and are pretty darned light. I wear mine inside my sleeping bag, especially in the winter, so that when I wake up I have something to wear that isn't frozen.

when I'm on the trail I try to keep things to a very lean minimum

I agree about coffee in the great outdoors... always tastes much better for some reason. I had an old tin percolator that I gave up carrying in favour of packing instant coffee (a poor substitute, imo)... sadly, it was lost over the years. It made the best damn cuppa joe ever. I really ought to look into getting another one.

I like my little short wave radio. Interesting newscasts and music from around the world. Plus, the battery lasts an entire 7 day trip and I get reception just about anywhere.
Plus a bag of very hard candy.

When the boys and me go camping on the rim I'll always bring a stadium chair with me. Folds up nicely and attaches to the side of my pack. The hike is only 1.5 miles so its not to be left out. Makes all the difference when your watching Indian TV and the movement of the breeze through the trees. Wow, somewhat poetical. Whatever..................

I empty out tea bags and fill them with good ground coffee, fold the bag back over and staple it. Use it just like a tea bag and makes great coffee.

Yea I know but I have a huge jar of assorted tea that will take me 3 life times to get through so I just use those.

Wow, this is a great idea! Gonna try that. I like hot chocolate as well, just the cheap instant stuff with mini marshmallows.
For me it's usually way more knives then I need to play with. I like whittling by the fire, I should invest in a good crooked knife.

Next time I'm out backpacking, it's going to be a book. Not a whole lot to do after the sun goes down and you're in a no-fire area, unless you're hiking around at night. During the winter in particular, it's a long time between sunset and me getting sleepy enough to fall asleep in my tent. A good book is a nice way to relax even more until sleep.
