Spyderco ball cage lock broke!

my spyderco manix moonglow ball cage lock just broke.
it snapped into 2 pieces.
unbelievable that such a strong lock with a polymer cage just broke.

details:
i was just chilling out in my room behind my desk.
and i took the spyderco manix moonglow out of my drawer.
and i open the knife and a part of the ball lock cage just dropped on my table.
very weird hope spyderco is willing to send me a new ball lock cage (polymer cage) since i live in the netherlands and shipping cost to the states are very high.
especially when i insure this knife.

That sucks man.

Shipping knives back to the factory is never fun in the first place and must really suck for someone living as far away from Oregon as you do. Here's hoping they just mail you the tiny piece of plastic instead of making you waste your money shipping the knife halfway across the world.

yeh indeed.
but i just contacted js.burly's the spyderco manix moonglow reseller.
he said that he will contact spyderco and get a ball cage lock for me.

Really sorry to hear the bad news. They can fix it, but like you said that shipping will be costly.

It wasn't long ago the caged ball fell out of someone's manix(not sure if it was here, or spyderco forum), and I remember one from last year that broke like your's, but it was dropped.

Am I understanding that you was simply open/closing the knife when the clear polymer cage broke?

Now, what is your complaint? It is a strong lock, and it didn't break. The piece of polymer that allows a person to disengage the lock broke.


With all that said, I think Spyderco will think of the best solution.

The colored is, but the clear is no stronger than plain ole plastic.



I'm kidding, the clear is just as strong as the colored, but IMO the clear just looks cheap, but that's just me.

Glad they can ship you another lock. Will it be easy to put in? I don't have a manix 2.

Good luck, and hope the new lock will never give you another problem I really dought it ever will again.

With all that said, I think Spyderco will think of the best solution.

The ball lock cage didnt disengage.
but keep in mind with out the ball cage lock there is nothing to hold the ball bearing beside the spring.
so during usage if your ball cage lock wil break.(i doubt it.)
the ball bearing can fall of too and the lock wil disengage.
but by the time you see the ball cage break i think you would stop using the knife.

Like other folks have pointed out, though, the title of the thread is a bit inaccurate, since it was the plastic cage around the locking mechanism rather than the lock itself that broke. In other words, the knife would still lock since the ball bearing was fine; it just couldn't be disengaged in any simple/normal way due to the the polymer cage breaking.

Here's a thought. The knife has been out for several years, with AFAIK not a single report of a broken cage, even when abused. Then within a couple of weeks we have a couple of reports of broken cages. I wonder if there was either a materials or manufacturing problem with a group of recently-made cages. I accept that the reports are genuine and happened under benign circumstances, but on the other hand it's odd that there would be failures all of a sudden unless there's some isolated problem with either the polymer or how it was formed.
