Will there be a para 2 sprint in elmax?

Maybe a composite para 2 sprint. Something like elmax/3v

I doubt Spyderco would make a composite blade, it hasn't happened yet. Aside from that, what would the purpose be to have the carriage material be such a high quality steel like 3V? Seems very wasteful in my view. One last thing, it makes no sense to hve a super stainless steel like Elmax next to 3V. It would be slightly diasterous with those that have a corrosion phobia.

I am not saying Elmax isn't a great folder knife. But the design of the PM2 would not take the best advantage of it. That is why there is a m390 pm2 instead of an m4. Spyderco prefers to get the most function out of its knife. So I think they would either put it with a different folder or a new knife all together. Personally for lock wise, Integral lock on a massive folder would be bad ass for elmax, but elmax as good abilities that could fit with most locks. You just need the blade thickness/design/geometry etc to be fully taking advantage of its properties. I can't speak for CPM-3V because I have never owned a knife with that steel (interested though) You see what I mean?

Hmm, interesting. The M390 Para2 sprint was a dealer exclusive. This means that someone selected the steel, color and paid to have a minimum amount made. Nothing to do with CPM-M4 at all. If I am missing something please let me know. How do you know with so much implied certainty that Elmax would not do well in a thinner stock folder knife? What are the "properties" that make it stand out in a thicker stock knife? I'm curious and want to know.

Yep, we're pretty much on the same page. The one thing I think we differ on is the degree to which Elmax and M390 are different in their properties. M390 has a bit higher wear resistance, but in terms of corrosion resistance and toughness, they're actually very similar. (See, for instance, this study, which finds that M390 actually has slightly higher toughness than Elmax at the higher end of each steel's respective hardness ranges [figure 9 at the end].) So IMHO if the Para 2 is a platform that allows one to really take advantage of M390's properties -- which I think we both agree it is -- it would also be an excellent platform for Elmax.

I think this is an interesting issue -- and one that, as I mentioned at the beginning of my previous post, is often overlooked in excitement about a given steel/platform -- so I'm glad it came up.

Ahh very nice. I have never dogged out M390 as hard as Elmax due to rumors that it couldnt hold up in toughness. This study proves rumors are false. It is an interesting read. Thank you for the article. I still stick to the experience of preferring to have a thicker blade to use Elmax. Now it is merely an opinion since both can hold up.
If spyderco does use elmax, I hope they take it with a sturdy integral lock (kinda like the bob lum tanto for benchmade [doesnt have to be a tanto]) I will have to try to get a hold of a M390 Fixed blade then. Like the SEER ELMAX Mk V but with m390. ty for the info

before reading that study i believed the toughness of the steel would be better utilized in a blade that could take a better beating. Now reading it, i find that m390 is not of the toughness it was rumored to be but of a higher toughness. I apologize. I still stick with, from experience, [kershaw vs zt] that a thicker blade helps

Thanks, I see your point, it would be interesting to see thin stock slicer style blades with some of these super steels though.

I really want to see Elmax used like the M4 used in bob lum Benchmade 760 LFTi. A sturdy folder that rivals a fixed blade. Nice thick but not over doing it piece of M4 (not exactly a tanto point in my vision but only example i have)

As I mentioned in my previous post, the main attraction to me in this (and most other) sprint runs is the blade steel. But I'd definitely be down for some Toxic Green G-10!

I thought I saw in the latest edition of Blade Mag that the Lion Spy was ELMAX. So it could be possible for a PM2 to have it on a future sprint run.?.

My bank account is about sprinted out on Para's, and Millies. Have a brown, 2 orange, and 2 dark green Para's on pre order....I need a break,lol.


If they make one with Foliage Green or another with Carbon Fiber I would be all over it though, no mater what the steel is.

If you look back at all the spyderco heavies (manix2, paramilitary, military, delica, endura, dragonfly) have all had foliage green g10, except the paramilitary 2...it's almost inevitable. What ever happened to cts-b75p?

I don't believe Spyderco will ever release a sharpened knife in red - I think that color is reserved for trainers.

That being said, I did swap the scales from my Delica trainer to my son's Delica FFG so he could have a red knife - and I love what it looks like.

I'm loving this thread and I hope the wishes expressed within will be considered.

I intend on owning every version of the PM2 so needless to say, you can put me down for two of each, whether it's foliage green, coyote brown, carbon fiber, red or even burgundy.

Bolster on a knife with compression lock would look plain weird
