I seem to have a few friends who don't really know much about knives, and don't really ever put knives to use per-se, but own a knife or two just for fun. I don't know if they count as non-knife people, but they say some wacky things...

I know it's not a knife but it's along the same vein of thought, so I figured I'd share a story that happened to me tonight at work involving my EDC flashlight. To preface, I am a restaurant manager.

A woman who ate at my restaurant finished her meal, walked out the door, then came back 10 minutes later all frantic. She ran up to one of my servers and started talking at him.

"I lost my glasses! They are prescription! Did I leave them at the table!?"

Server: "I didn't see them but let's go look."

So they went to the booth that she was sitting at. The glasses weren't on the table or on the seats. It is a long booth that recedes far back all the way up to a wall. From where I was standing helping to close out a check for someone I saw the server pull out his iPhone and start to use the little flashlight on it to try to look under a 6 foot long dark space. I walked up to them.

"Do you need help? I have a flashlight." (4Sevens Quark Mini 123 at the time)

Server: "No, it's fine. I have my phone." (His phone was barely shedding light on 2 feet of the deep dark recess under the booth)

"Let me try mine." Pull out light, switch it to brightest setting, immediately see glasses twinkling down at the end of the booth. I slid down and grabbed them for her. She thanked me and walked out.

Some people just don't realize that you can't do a task without the right quality tool, even something as simple as looking for some glasses.

I actually got this recently at work, when I was cutting up a grapefruit at lunchtime (mini Dejavoo) ...

NKP: "That's a big knife. You know weapons are not allowed [here]."
me: "It's not a weapon, it's a tool."
NKP: "That is a weapon."
me: "I am cutting fruit. If I were threatening to do someone harm, it might be considered a weapon."
NKP: "Who said anything about doing anyone harm? I didn't say anything like that."
me: "It's a tool."
NKP: walks away ...

Now this person actually has a history of getting into other people's business, even making allegations of inappropriate behavior against some folks (got a friend of mine fired based on accusation alone), so ever since this conversation happened, I carry a small SAK (in addition to my EDC) just in case this person ever tries to "turn me in", or asks me to show someone my knife. Hasn't happened yet, but I have an Alox Cadet in my pocket, just in case ...

If they DID take it away from you, they would happily in return give you a 9 inch chef's knife in it's place......

I got a lot of crap in a printmaking class I took for credits last semester. I decided to do a linoleum cut print based on a photo of my dad's old Case lockback because I thought it would be a cool print with the woodgrain in the background. I swear to God I heard this everyday I was working on it:

"Why are you making a print of a weapon!?"

"That was your dad's? Was he a serial killer?" (I almost decked this guy)

"Oh my God that print is so violent!"

Finally someone asked me what I would use that knife for since I said: "No, it is not a weapon!" enough times. I replied:

"Well I don't personally use this knife, it's a memento for me and I still have it in the case my dad saved with it with the instruction manual even still intact!"

To which I got: "What do the instructions say? Stab!?"

Thank God I never have to see any of those people again, and thank God I never had cause to use my Para 2 in front of them.

Well I did have a coworker use the CAD engraver at work to write "STAB STAB STAB" onto his knife blade...


Honestly I thought it was hilarious myself, but some others were displeased. I did use the same engraver to put BOBUSX on one of my knives though, so at least he was inspirational.

I usually hear "thats a nice knife" ..becuase most of them have never seen a knife you cant get at Wallmart.

I showed a friend my Native 5 and he said....oh its a Spyder ....(instead of Spyderco)

and of course when I tell them what I paid,..I get alot of "how much,....for a knife??"

Great one. I worked very closely with the VP in our center. We became pretty good friends, but it was always fun to show him a new blade. Once I waved my Endura Wave for him.... he started sweating bullets. Priceless.

I tend to carry 2 to 3 knives a day. A large folder, an EDC, and some sort of fixed blade. I always get asked "why do you need so many knives on you?" I usually reply with a "why not?" When a coworker asked and I replied he said "I carry one and that is all I need," and pulls out a CS Recon 1 tanto. I am fine with that knife (considering he has bought me two of them) but upon examination the edge was so messed up and dull.... I don't think it could cut hot butter... I think he was trying to cut steel or something I dunno... Then I explained that since I have a knife "system" I tend to always have a sharp knife... After the conversation he wants me to work on his blades and I caught him looking up knives online... great day.

Nice dude planting the seed! Wouldn't be too unlikely that he winds up here at BF lol.

I'm sure he normally uses a cruddy box cutter because almost got his leg because he pulled so hard! "Holy S***! this thing is sharp!". "oh yeah" I said "I keep my knives like my wits ". He couldn't figure out the lock so he just handed it back to me and said "dang that's sharp, what are you gonna use that for?"

Nobody figures out the compression lock! If I lend my P2 they open it, use it and hand it back to me still open. I only lend it to selected people. The other day I was at a meeting and one man was tearing open some framed pictures that he had wrapped very well in bubble pack and Mylar tape. He was struggling to open them. I asked him if he wanted a knife. He replied, "Yes, do you have one?" To this my good friend standing nearby said in a low voice, "He ALWAYS has a knife...or two."

Maybe, That coworker just happens to be my brother in law... And he is WAY into guns... Kinda like I am way into knives. My father in law always says " I have my gun son and my knife son... I am covered." LOL cool guy.
