Egad! I wouldn't pay that much for a hand tool even if it came out of the carpentry shop of Jesus Christ himself.
Mighty fine stuff, though.
whew! thats nuts...
It's kind of a shame that the collection is being broken up. William Scagel was the first of the great custom knife makers and he made a pretty nice hatchet too ;-)) The prices may seem high but they are actually way down from 15 to 20 years ago.

Someone will buy them.

An old saying in the antiques business, "Sometimes the rarest commodity is availabilty". All the heavy hitters will be there to buy these pieces but the real issue will be, how many. It's a shame a museum didn't get the collection.

What a collection! As they say, something is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it. Unfortunately, collections are always broken up after the person putting it together dies.

nice Scagel pieces, he sure made whatever needed made

I'd love to own his table, what a piece of history. The man was a true artist and a Canadian to boot ;-)))

[QUOTE=FortyTwoBlades;10560107]Not only that, but often the rarest items are ones with little to no value because no one even knew they existed, so there's no interest. Thought that's certainly not the case here, of course.[/QUO
Yes exactly. The problem with this collection is the older heavy collectors of Scagels are few and far between and the prices have dropped over the years. This should be an interesting auction to watch.

The prices of 4 hatchets in the Scagel sale. $19,500.00 just under the low estimate.
$16,000.00 just under low.
$26,000.00 over high estimate.
$12,500.00 for a well used hatchet, went for over high estimate.
The entire sale went very well bringing over $800,000.00 for 70 pieces, 37 pieces went over high estimate.
