That's one of the coolest parts IMO.

Spyderco 2012 Prototype – Ulrich Hennicke Ulize

As I had my head stuck firmly behind my camera in the lightbox by the time I was handed this beautiful slender folder, I had to search for a quote by Sal that explains the origin of the Ulize prototype. Any mistakes in this quote are my own and not Sal’s.

“A police officer in Germany (nickname Sony) had an idea to create a Spyderco knife purpose designed for the "Polizei" in Germany. He wanted a percentage of the sales to go to the families of fallen German policemen. He contacted a custom knifemaker (Ulrich Hennicke) to design and build a prototype to show to Spyderco. Uli sent the knife to us for evaluation. (Uli + Polizei = "Ulize" per Uli)

Uli is an exceptional knife designer and custom knifemaker that is familiar with Spyderco, our designs and our company. We thought the design to be worthy and we showed the prototype model at the meet last year as well as some shows. Response was good to we recreated the design for production. We couldn't use the custom textured carbon fiber and still make the model affordable, so we opted for a black peel-ply G-10. It does have a 4 way clip. VG-10. If response is good to a production piece, we can consider other handle options.”

I was most struck by the lightweight and elegance of this rather large design. It’s in the size category of the Police, but this knife felt so much more lively in the hand.

Thank you again. That Southard flipper looks great except I wish they'd do a 4-way clip.

I just got through blowing all the tax return money & this happens. I need that Caly 3.5, the Ulize, & that big plastic tick. How do I get the tick? I have a big display with stands that needs it.

It's one of the USB drives that Spyderco sells, they come in many colors, check out their website or any of the usual dealers. I use it as a prop to show relative scale of the various models.

Spyderco is on fire with these models. In no particular order:

Southard Folder: Simply amazing, this will be an awesome folder.
Lum Tanto: Thanks! I really wanted one but missed them when they came out.
    Stealth Chaparral: Full of Win!
    Ulize: Love at first sight!

Thanks for the great pictures Mr. B!

Man RevDevil you are spot on. Spyderco is on fire! There really isnt a single one I dont like. But as to what I can afford. We will see.
I really like the Air, Southard, Ulize, and surprisingly the Dodo. Its such a crazy awesome design.
Just because you can't see the difference doesn't mean it isn't there; it just means you can't see it.

The southard flipper is amazing! I can't see anything i would want to change not even the lockbar stop, i love that too! The ulize looks like a curvy police g10, i like it as well but not as much as the flipper.

yea i didnt care for the cf chaparral because of my cf caly 3, but i got to have this new one.

that flippers lockstop looks weird but as long as it works. i wonder if it helps prevent knife from closing? it doesnt matter that blade is just up my alley. plus its spydercos 1st flipper? that might be something to have in a collection but i know i couldnt resist. i hope they will be easier to get than the zt flipper.

and that ulize looks almost graceful. I hope they make one in a more manageable size, but im more of an endura than police person. I also like guards that cup my hand. but i know just the person who might get one of these for christmas

Ok added another one to the shopping list: now I am at Nilakka, Szabo and Southard. Spyderco is definitely on fire this year, very beautiful knives are coming our way.

I want that Ulize. Wow! I hope the Ulize catches on too. I'd love to see a linerlock or compression lock version of the Ulize.
