OP must be one of those hipsters that just uses his pocket knife to make peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.

A tactical knife could be very effective if a rottweiler or pitbull comes out of nowhere and locks his jaws on you, then you could slice its throat......I bet you would regret forgetting your tactical blade after a vicious dog attacks you.

You'd be surprised of how many home invasions there has been where I live, and many times people have been murdered in their own home because they were not prepared, that's why I have 4 big dogs in my yard and house that bark like hell and let me know if intruders are on my property, that's when I grab the shotgun.

Just last night, my nephew who's just barely graduated from med school(now a resident) had his room broken into while he slept. All his valuables were stolen. Thieves here in the Philippines have a new MO. They manage to obtain some kind of soporific that they release into the airconditioner's intake. These thieves are armed nevertheless and if you just happen to wake up while they are near you, you get stabbed.

Call me scared but I'd rather be prepared.

S35, that's aweful. On the bright side he wasn't hurt I guess.

How do you protect your aircon from... getting doped?

Yeh, we're glad that at least he wasn't hurt.

So far we haven't come up with a way to protect an window type A/C unit from this kind of assault. Split types are more secure since you can mount the exterior unit in a more inaccessible area(roof, for instance).

In one location I put a Chamberlain driveway alarm. I set it up so the its view is more narrow. This is for an area I don't want people to have access to undetected. I learned this the hard way. I stayed and worked one of the in place shelters during a hurricane that knocked power out of for 5 days. After the storm passed I went home. I was one of the few people not evacuated on my street. Next morning I woke up stuff had been stolen, from that point on I hard time sleeping. I bought several low end battery motion alarms mostly junk. I did some looking and found this unit and it works well, but not perfect. It does run from AA on both ends and the receiver can use AC. So what I am saying is, maybe modify/setup this type of device to protect only the aircon. It can be mounted or act as a portable device say for travel.
Thanks! That's a good idea. Or some kind of invisible tripwire sensor. We never thought in terms of alarm systems. We were thinking of making it physically impossible to access the A/C.

I have always believed that the toughest people in the world are not scared to be soft, i know how to defend myself and my loved ones if need be but first and foremost i will use my mind as the primary weapon, I am pretty well much always aware of my surroundings and who is near me. On the rare occasion i have to awaken and be alert instantly I am. Yes I always carry a blade, always have, always will.

If you go looking for trouble you will find it but it doesn't ever hurt to be prepared for it and having the confidence to know that you can handle yourself and protect your loved ones goes along way to detering a potential attacker from doing something stupid.

I want a knife that I can use like a fixed blade and not have to worry about ruining it. I don't carry mine for defense I carry it for general cutting tasks like 90% of the people on this forum. Should the unlikely need arise, I could use it as a last ditch effort to defend myself.
+1 with the addendum that, as mentioned before, training is the best defense and since I spend a lot of time in the boonies, I like to have a good solid knife, some cordage and a source of fire on my person at all times at a bare minimum

That's indeed nasty, but glad he wasn't hurt. As suggested by Allout, some kind of alarm could be useful. Maybe it's also possible to put an active carbon filter in the AC, but maybe it blocks the airflow too much.

Read some more interesting posts again, thanks.
