Where are my asians at?!!!?!?!

American-born Japanese. I personally do not know any other Asians who collect knives. Much less carry and use them. Except for my late father, who carried various pocketknives and an old Buck 110 at work. Then again, I know few non-Asians who are into knives, either. Those few who are aware of my interest in knives think it's weird. As if my reason for carrying is the chance to go all "Jason" on someone.

I collect Chinese knives. big problem. people in the urban areas are not allowed to carry even a pen knife. Some may have heirloom swords. I correspond w/ people who will buy and send me knives, but they don't collect. i speak some mandarin, understand some, can read a little pin-yin, but the character language is a road to insanity (I try though). I have what i am told are the 2 finest books on chinese knives --not just swords and military stuff. I have worked 3 years and i am about 1/3 through the largest one--won't use a translator software. The good part is that i have read over 200 books on China, met many American Chinese, and made some friends. One guy i know was a leader in the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution. Lots of interesting stories. I have enjoyed it all. b

We brought back some nice Bali swords last trip but I did not get to shop any itak or barong.

Well my wife is from Bukittinggi, Sumatra. Her family is Minangkabau, and watching them haggle over stuff at the pasar is a thing to behold. Her mother is the best at it, being able to knuckle down the merchants to serious bargins. Thats the one thing they don't like about the United States, no haggling and fixed prices. Takes all the fun out of shopping, they says.

I just noticed this thread this morning!

Well, I'm a Malaysian by citizenship and a Javanese by ethnicity.
Just moved ~ 460 km north from Kuala Lumpur (i.e. Federal Territory) to Alor Setar (i.e. in the State of Kedah).
Andrew aka Redvenom, Lim aka douglas_lim, Nik aka Nepki, Anton aka naturalist and I know each other even though we haven't met in person (i.e. except Andrew).
There are some more Asian in BF but I guess they just haven't come across this thread yet!

BTW Bill aka Imalterna, your large table knife is a Parang (i.e. Condor I guess)!

I like Javanese food. Javanese like their food sweet. Ate at a lot of small shops on Malioboro in Yogyakarta. Sumatran food burns holes in my stomach. Satay Padang in particular. I looooooove slow cooked Sumatran rendang. Takes all day to make it properly. Balinese food seems to be sweet or salty. Ate at a place called Made's Warung, and Bebek Bengil. Great food at both. In Jakarta, istriku took me to Blok S, good stuff to be had there.
