There is no such thing as being to dumb to own guns any more than there is no such thing as being to dumb to breed, That is the downside of something being a right.

Why was Orwell's 1984 not included in the survey?

The thing with preppers is that most believe survival is an individual activity, which leads to some serious miscalculations with respect to the value of civilization. Building skills, having a plan, stocking reserves are objectives that work on a family, community, state and national level. The activity has value and holds true at the individual level for perhaps hours or days, but to go longer a longer period requires that we project those values onto others; it requires leadership and organizational skills and mass. The result can be the difference between a hurricanes Andrew and Katrina. One community pulled itself together in short order while the other became a basket case that compounded the disaster. To this day most south Florida residents take heed of hurrican warnings and stock a few days worth of basics. It is not going to get them through a end of the world scenario, but it will help to maintain order for a couple of days or a week until normality can be restored.

Trent - I've been prepping all wrong... what is the best knife to use for "deanimating intelligent monkeys?" It seems that I have an overabundance of anti-zombie blades I'm willing to trade.

That depends on whether you worry about blood splatter.

    The op====>
i saw this dude telling his story on some alex jones yt video
i think there is more to the story
alex jones twisted it like it was some conspiracy to "keep down" the preppers by the govt

however, i did have a buddy (who sadly committed suicide later from metal illness..imho) who was subjected to the same thing
they locked him up for 72 hours (5150 in california police jargon)
and they took away his guns
he was in the process of trying to get them back
was a pain in the butt
    hearings, court dates and such

    bottom line
don't ever say (even in passing) that you want to harm yourself or others
that is the only reason they can do the 72 hour lock down/psych evaluation
    at least in california...

It's kind of a fine line
i don't like the thought of the govt deciding who and who is not "crazy"
    period. End of story.
They would have said dali and einstein were crazy!!!

i know in some states the govt can force a person to take his meds

    AUSTRIAN SCHOOL ROCKS!

I watched a couple video's of the guy to see what he was all about, and he didn't seem to be crazy to me. Eccentric, yes, but not nuts. He EDC's a Kindle loaded with a bunch of survival/medical/bible books which I thought was a pretty reasonable idea. I don't think I'd EDC it, but it might be good for the bug out bag. He also recommends the M-16 platform and the Glock 17 (both with .22 mods) as SHTF guns, so he isn't too crazy.

I haven't been able to pinpoint EXACTLY why the preppers align with The Austrian School
My best guess would be the personal liberties slant of von Mises, Rothbard and Hayek
And less govt and more free market
And The Guru of Survivalism, Rawles dude, publicly states he is an Austrian Schooler
(and they call ME a member of the sheep family??...OFTEN!!!??...pfft!!!)
I hold to to the Austrian School of economics and tend toward Contrarian Investing.
    http://survivalblog.com/investing.html
I stopped reading Rawles dudes stuff last year
    He doesn't allow comments
So I was unable to post my classic comment==>"
"You should stick to teaching people how to baton wood and make jerky. Leave the macro economic discussions to the professionals. TY in advance"
It's more of a soap box for JWR and his books and DVD's, than a DISCUSSION forum..imho

Although I always get some guy who thinks he is an Austrian School follower, tell me that "WE NEED to put the tariffs so we can bring or jobs back!!!"
Which makes no sense to me because I think that tariffs and protectionism has been proven a 100% failure by history and The Austrian School is definitely against tariffs

The preppers also like to toss around the term normalcy bias, quite frequently and on a whim
The normalcy bias, or normality bias, refers to a mental state people enter when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalcy_bias

I have been accused of being a "paid govt blogger/forum poster/propagandist" because I am optimistic about our economic recovery and I actually have to GALL to believe govt reported data

I don't think the prepeprs are all crazy
I just think they are ultra pessimistic segment of society
When I was a kid we used to call them chicken littles...lol
and a high percentage do suffer what I would define as persecutory delusions

I'm not making this post to bash the preppers
These are just some of my observations after about a year and a half of being on several survivalist forums
Most of them are good people who are worried about their kids and grandkids future in this time of uncertainty
Nothing wrong with that, I guess.....

Maybe a reasonable presumption on the part of the pollsters that too much of the population is unacquainted with serious literature.

Isn't "1984" the failed spin off from "That 70's Show?"

    True
I'm surprised Road Warrior and The Road were not on the list either

I was required to read Animal Farm and 1984 in my senior HS English class
    What about you guys?

I had already read most of Orwell's writings well before I entered High School. By the way, his name was not George Orwell. It was Eric Arthur Blair. And he had a rooster named Henry Ford and a poodle named Marx.

Probably because of the story (I think they made a movie too) which would have gotten my vote. It was called the Marching Morons. In it stupid people outbred the smart ones with predictable (and currently observable) results.

The movie "Idiocracy" is spot on.
