Next came cutting and carving. The cutting edge on this knife does everything a knife is supposed to. The only thing I’ll say is that the guard makes getting your thumb up onto the spin kind of awkward, but it just takes a little getting used to. The serrations stop short enough to give you a nice smooth surface for using your thumb on the spine to add pressure to your cuts and notches. When it finally came time to touch up the edge, it was a normal quick touchup session and easily came back to shaving sharp.
Carving with this knife is easy. Positioning your thumb while choking up on the blade just takes a little getting used to.
Although this knife’s intended use was never really bushcraft oriented, its bevels and geometry work just fine for carving and fine work.
Another harsh test for knives is breaking down crates and pallets. I didn’t have any on hand, so I nailed together some 2x4’s to simulate the work. I smashed the tip between the boards at the joints to loosen it up and then popped them apart with some twisting and prying. The knife held up just fine. No damage or anything anywhere.
It’s hard not to stab this knife into stuff. It’s just such a natural feeling act with a knife designed this way. I stabbed it into several different materials, from stacked cardboard to stacked carpet to leather, wood, you name it. This blade penetrates very well and between the blade geometry, edges, and the rest of the design, I could see it being very effective in close quarters.
Stabbing was CERTAINLY one of the intended uses of this knife. This particular piece of outdoor carpet has a super tough plastic coating in addition to the normal carpet underside. This made stabbing with any knife more difficult, but the SOG buried itself deep into the carpet’s vitals with no problem.
I put this knife through well beyond its paces in every task I could come up with. I even made sure to use it in areas like saltwater environments to test the corrosion resistance. Not once did I clean it aside from getting sap off the blade. I never oiled it or in any way maintained it. The only thing I did was touch up the edge. Though it didn’t develop any of that “used patina character”, it also let me know that it’s not going to degrade at all any time soon. I can honestly say that I am extremely satisfied with its performance and really happy with the changes from the SCUBA/DEMO. This new version was everything the original design could and should have been. I wouldn’t think twice about recommending it to all my buddies in the armed forces and to anyone in the outdoors community that wants a useable knife with that combat knife look to it. It’s all around a really cool knife.
