From the end of where the handle and blade meet to the tip of the blade.

Ok so its not where the sharp part starts but it includes the metal up to the handle.

That is correct. The cutting edge length is always shorter than or nearly equal to the blade length.

Most likely not. It's like ajbuckelew stated, I must confess however that I have probably never actually measured any of my knives blade lengths.

My ZT 350's blade is 3.25in. The cutting edge is closer to 3.5in. I think they measured from the back where the stop pins hit the handle

If you're asking how each of us or the knife company measures, you get an opinion. If you ask how a legislator or police officer measures, you get a legal interpretation. Each answer can be different. The last of those might be the most important.

Agreed. I typically consider the blade length to be from where the handle ends to the tip. I figure this is "worst case scenario" if any kind of law enforcement ever gets involved (however unlikely), because this is likely how they would measure. My opinion only, though.

That's what I think of as "stabbing depth"

You may have reversed those numbers, friend.

If he measured the actual cutting edge, it makes sense that it is longer than the blade length. Any cutting edge with a curve will be longer than the blade. If you have a box and have a blade excluding the handle inside that box, the curve of the edge will be longer than the straight line measurement of the blade. The only exception are straight blades like wharncliffs, in which case the edge and blade length will be identical (excluding stuff like choils).

    +1

I know plenty of cops who still go by the "width of hand" rule. There are a lot of variations, so for a knife like the Manix 2, blade length can be anywhere from <3" to almost 3.5"!
