Replacement spring for Cheap Chinese OTF

I recently got a cheap, Chinese OTF to play around with (legal to own, not carry in Va, so it is a Stay at Home Package Opener. Also the reason I opted for a cheap POS), and after finally reprofiling the awful edge, and putting a fair amount of time into getting the thing to even cut... the spring broke. Is there any place online that sells the springs that these knives use? I could spend 50 bucks and get a new knife, but would rather just replace the spring if possible. Thanks guys.

In order to know what sort of spring you need we'd probably have to see pics, or at least get links to a site that has pics of the knife.

If you could, it be most helpful to show us what the spring/mechanism looks like. You may be able to get one at a hardware or hobby store if it's just a plain old spring, but if it's something crazy obviously it'll be harder to find.

Since you sound new to otf knives I will ask....Are you sure the spring is broke, or does it just need to be reset? If the blade is just loose and won't fire, grasp the blade and pull out as far as you can and it will catch and reset.

Another thing that needs mentioning is that very rarely if EVER these springs break in the middle. Usually what happens even on the good ones is that the spring fails at the end where it attaches to the firing pins that each end of the spring. To fix this you do not need a whole new spring. You simply take the very last coil left on the spring into the hook shape and use it some more. Now if the spring fails multiple times its probably a crap spring. Ive had good luck at ACE hardware and the website for McMaster Carr. They carry many springs and if you have a fish scale you can test to see how many pounds the spring is.

Wow... Didn't think of that. This is exactly what I needed to do. Thanks!

    Just buy one of these:

There are some springs in it that you might swap into your OTF.

What? It makes as much sense as buying a Chinese OTF and then attempting to fix it.

That is a Highly sought after Desert Knife Works Sandshark. They have been discontinued and have become quite collectable. Fetching over 4-6 times what they originally cost. Some feel they are overrated while many hold them to be the end all be all in OTF knife design.

Also, they are only slightly better looking than an Excalibur.

I thought so, but wasn't sure. Never seen a photo of one with that blade. Thanks!

yeah they did a few in damascus. My favorite being a yellow/gold handled Odins Eye damascus. That is my grail OTF.

That particular Damascus blade is one of the later versions, w/o the signature SandShark "fish hooks" on the base of the blade.

    Examples of the other version:

The fish hooks ruin the blade shape, IMO and the single slot looks much better than two.

To each his own opinion. I sold off the one I had w/the new blade shape. Looked *unfinished* IMO...

Absolutely. I'm not knocking the Sandshark, it isn't legendary for no reason! It's just one of those knives that I would love if it were just a little bit different!
