I am just starting to get into bushcraft but I can tell you about what got me into the outdoors and sparked my love for it.


Geocaching ....yup thats right! I first started going out when i started dating my current girlfriend (over a year a ago now) and quickly found that I liked the ones in the woods the best. Since then we have found over 40 caches and plan to do day trips this summer into more remote areas to search. I have recently taken my nephew out (he is 4) we first did one that was about 30 to 40 feet into the woods with a little bushwhacking. Boy was he excited to go look for "buried Treasure", so we made it about halfway in and he just stops infront of me, looks up and says "its like we are in a rainforest!" That did it for me, to see him so happy and excited to be out in the woods sparked something in side of me I can't explain. We went and found another cache that day that was in a little bit more of an urban area.

Needless to say the outdoors and wilderness will take a large role in my life in the future and I can't wait.

I haven't given away anything since my 1000th post. I have some hiking staffs and walking sticks to give away. I use one whenever I take a long
walk or hike. They are handy to have. I will give one away at the end of each month until I run out of the many extras that I have. Post why you

Thank you. It's a very nice staff that measures 55 1/2" in height , 1 1/4" in diameter at the top, tapering to 1" at the bottom.

My first remembered outdoor experience was living on the Navy base in Annapolis, MD as a kid. We played daily in the woods, building debris shelters and eating the crabapples we had harvested. We went barefoot to toughen our feet, and used our Cub Scout knives to make tools and traps (they never caught a thing). We had a blast! Poison ivy be damned, and the ticks too, much to my mother's annoyance.

I'm not in the contest, I've already got a nice collection of hiking staffs, walking sticks, and canes! I will say, that's a beautiful stick you're giving away.

I've been walking with sticks for many years, even back when I didn't "need" them. I found they were super useful pushing over rough ground or through dense bush.

I like hiking, camping, "bushcrafting" and fishing because it gets me away from everything and everyone. I guess that I also like to keep in touch with my more primitive side, too.
Plus, if I didn't do it, I'd sit on my a*%$ all day, everyday.

I live in one of the most densely populated cities in the world: Hong Kong. I would gladly cover the shipping if I won!

I do walk with a cane for parting bushes and, left with no choice, for cutting through enormous spiderwebs I can't get under (they often span the entire trail). They are also great for extra support on slippery terrain and for defense from two legged critters and wild dogs. Ironically, even though this is a major city, there is amazing tropical forest all around us!

I like getting out into the woods because our mountains are extremely steep and for the most part, very, very quiet. It's nice to breathe fresh air, the views of the mountains (and the city!) are amazing, I see all kinds of bugs and flowers I've never seen before every single time I go out and it's great exercise. It just blows me away that so much nature is right at our doorsteps here. When I'm in the forest, I'm alone with nature and my thoughts. I can't do treadmills or walk on tracks since they are extremely boring, but being in the outdoors is always an adventure.

The picture below is not mine, but it was taken from a 62-mile long trail that people walk for charity every year. I'm not ready for it by any means (it is extremely steep and rugged in places), but I have walked several sections of it. The PLA (Chinese Army) hold the current record: they did it in 11 hours and 59 minutes in 2010!

I hate the outdoors. They're wild. And dangerous. Nasty stuff.
I like to stay indoors and watch tv. Good stuff.
I could use the staff to flip the channels without gettin' my butt off the couch.

This seems to be Chinese arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis; formerly: Thuja orientalis).
Lightweight wood, comparable in strength to most pines. The nice color is the result of the staining used during the manufacturing process.
These stick are sold as made of “bianbai wood”, the Chinese term for this arborvitae species.
