My buddy is going to help me make my wheels from steel on a lathe. How should I tell him to machine the bearing pocket so there is no side load on the bearings? Also, he has said that he will probably machine the wheels the exact size as the outer race and then heat them, and drop the bearing in so it is a perfect press fit when they cool. Does this sound appropriate?

I will be giving him info on dimensions from the Beaumont website. I'm hoping these turn out. I would be a huge savings!

Sounds like he knows what he is doing.

You need a spacer between the bearings the same diameter as the inner race. When you tighten the bolt, the two races and the spacer are solid and the brgs spin free. Jess

    Jesse has it right.

I would press fit with .000 5 interference.

Sounds about right, or he could freeze and install if you don't want to heat anything.

Thanks Jesse and Sam. I wonder, could he relieve the area where the bearing sits, then relieve all but where the inner race is? Basically make a fixed spacer?

Nevermind, I don't think it will work. It won't rotate correctly, I think.

Myker, is there a difference between freezing the bearing and heating the wheel?

I'm going to run a flat platen to begin with. The first thing I'm going to do after that is run a grizzly wheel.

my contact wheel and idler pulley has 2 bearings with no spacer I got around that by using a 9/16 machine washer on each side and a double nut, tighten the first nut so that it is snug and then tighten the double nut to lock it into place
