How did you discover Spyderco?

I learned about them from this forum... everyone was talking about them but i didn't really like them in the beginning. Bought a Coldsteel mini AK (actually pretty cool), Then a Benchmade Grip (felt to cheap), Then finally a delica, which i loved and ended up getting a native which is a tough little guy.

Theres a trend of the people disliking them like i did, but once you get one it is done...

One of my best friends introduced me to spyderco back in the early 90's letting me play with his endura and police. I forgot about spyderco for another 20 years almost until I got one for Christmas two years ago and have had one in my pocket ever since. I don't know why I waited so long, all those years I missed out on the joy of having a spyderco in my pocket.

I first discovered spyderco about this time of year 5 years ago. I believe I was thumbing though a Cabelas catalog and was instantly attracted to their unique and (in my eye anyways) practical blade profile. Anyhow a couple of weeks later I was on a road trip with my family and we passed through Springfield MO. and made a stop at the big uber bass pro shop and there in the knife section of the store laid my eyes on the first spydercos I'd seen in person. I'd saved a bit of cash from mowing lawns and doing odd work. I then emptied a great deal of my savings into a black FRN saber ground combo-edge Delica 4. I can still rember the look of bewilderment on my dads and brothers face when I paid 60 whole dollars on a "plastic handled knife made in japan" that is until I let them gel the scary sharp factory edge that put the knives in their pockets to shame. Good times. I still have that heavily worn Delica somewhere, but decided to quit carrying it due to the immense sentimental value it had in my eyes.

I first saw Spyderco knives back in the mid eighties. I thought they were stupid and ugly, and proceeded to ignore them. Over the years I watched them gain popularity, handled a few, noticed they were well made, but still ignored them because they were stupid and ugly. I sold knives at gun shows for a while, took a few Spydercos in trade and began to appreciate the ergonomics.

About two years ago I was at a gun show and had my eye on a pistol. Looked at it, walked around a while, decided it was worth the price and went back to see if the guy would come down a few bucks. The table was really crowded, so I was looking at knives across the aisle until it cleared out. The knife table had an incredible selection of Spydercos. The seller was real nice, feel free to handle anything. I picked up a Para and while glancing over at the gun table, I saw someone buying the S&W I wanted. I stood there in shock, with that knife in my hand not looking at it but opening and closing it, even slid it into my pocket to see how it rode. Getting over my disappointment, I turned back to the knife table and realizing how good that knife felt, tried out a few more. I left with a Native which became my EDC work knife from the first day.

After carrying the Native for a week I was a Spyderco fan for sure. I wanted a smaller knife for off work carry and after shopping online, ordered a Sprint Run Rookie. I fell in love with that one too. So two years later those stupid and ugly Spydercos were doing 80% of my EDC duty. I just got my Native 5 Wednesday and I'll be retiring my Native lightweight. I have several other knives I need to sell as well, and I'll be picking up a few more Spydies. I'm real impressed with Spyderco blade steels, ergonomics and overall quality. I'm even starting to like the way they look.

In mid 2010, my friend knew I was into knives and mentioned that Spyderco knives were Dr. Lecter's blade of choice in Hannibal. I found out online that a knife store near me sold Spyderco, so I stopped by to look.

I walked out with the black Ladybug Hawkbill sprint, which never left my keychain until early this year when I got the H1 version.

I saw the coyote brown ffg delica very shortly after they came out and had to had one, a few days later it came in the mail as a birthday present from my parents. I have it in my pocket right now!

I held one of those ugly and terrible, generic looking, "plastic handled" knives for the first time and hated it. Finally traded for a NIB Tenatious and ended up using it very often. Still think they are ugly as hell but love the lower end stuff. Cannot be beat for the price.
