Possible to remove lettering from black blade?

Hey guys, I recently bought a Kershaw Scallion (black bladed version) and was planning on using it as the base knife for my first attempt at making custom G10 scales.

On the back side of the blade, there are 4 lines of text that they for some reason decided to place right in the middle of the blade. Model number, "patented", Kershaw logo, Speedsafe / USA and finally the designer's name. The knife is small to begin with and this unnecessary verbiage takes up about 1/3 of the blade height and 1/3 of its width. The lettering is in gold and it looks pretty stupid, especially on a knife I had planned to customize and show off. Don't know why they couldn't have used smaller font and put any required text in a less conspicuous spot, closer to the tang.

Anyway, is it possible to remove this without damaging the black coating (DLC, I believe)? It's probably painted on, but it could be laser etched. If it were a SS blade, it would be easy to polish off.

Unless you plan on removing all of the coating (which is very difficult to do with DLC) then no, you can't remove the etching.

That's what I was afraid of.

Anyone want to buy a really nice black Scallion?

While non-paying members can't sell on the forums, take a look at the trading section of the exchange. Someone might just want to trade a beadblasted one for your black one!

Thanks, I'll do that. If I can't work out a trade, I'll just make do with it and accept that the left side of this knife will be its "good" side. It'll be the side with the fancy scale anyway.

Thanks for the tip. I actually tried paint stripper on it yesterday, but it didn't seem to have any effect. It didn't damage the blade...yea, tough stuff.

600 grit and a little elbow grease will take of DLC.

I have seen pictures of a beadblasted and then stonewashed previous DLC blade. The laser etching it still visible. You would have to re coat the blade. You could maybe ask Kershaw if they have a serile blade but dont get your hopes up.
