Getting ready to box up my mini knife for the KITH and ship it off! I had some good light this morning so I took a couple more pics. Here's one of them...



Sorry for the poor image quality, I took it with my phone. The vignette is actually just natural light and I taped some paper on the window to frame it that way, like a natural spot light.


I think I have settled on how I am going to do my DFK Tanto, so it will be moved up the list now that the KITH is over. I still have some organizational duties to do, but it doesn't take much time once the KITH is closed. I need to source some materials for the tanto handle, and test a couple techniques, but in theory it will work! It's just the relationship of theory and practice that doesn't always work out!

Update!

I'm busy here, outta control! I wound up working until late last night and was on a roll. I spent all morning re-grinding my original bottle opener knives and re-anodizing them... I stumbled upon a few techniques last night that brought the new Bottle Opener knives from pretty darn cool to really freaking cool! lol

The surface finish is now 100% better and the anodizing is literally twice as bright.

Did I mention I have spent $400 on belts this week, I am trying to perfect my Titanium finish and last night I finally got it. I had 12 done and went through all 12 again because the new finish is that much better.

Thanx Daniel! I'm pretty much fed-up with trying to use artificial interior lighting for my pics, when I get good morning or evening light, I try to take advantage of it. This shot is something I have been experimenting with for a while, trying to find where in the house it worked best, and at what times of morning. This shot is difficult because you have to be able to move the subject wthout changing the exposure, due to the rotation of the earth. If you look at the butt of the handle you see it is just on the edge of the shadow, it was perfectly centered when I framed the shot and the time between 5-6 frames at different zooms! Fortunately the camera on my phone allows quite a bit of control, and it is great for web size shots and prints up to 5x7 and sometimes larger.

I think you'll dig the tanto, I know I do already! Its only seen some light duty so far, staying on my dresser. Cut some VS tags off stuff for the wife, loose thread, things like that.

Looking good Kevin! But remember, the light should come from behind the camera, not in front of it! You'll get much better color saturation that way, even light at 80-90* of the line of sight is better than trying to shoot a reflection. The spot lit shot I did, the light was coming at an angle roughly inline with the X-Y plane of the blade and at about 11:00 angle. If I rotated around to the right, bringing the light into the focal zone the white handle, white background, 2500# polished blade all of a sudden became so washed out it would be tough to tell them apart.

Big, at all costs avoid surgery! Ask for second and third opinions from specialists, be aggressive with your care providers about not wanting a surgery unless its a last resort or supremely better option. I've had 5 knee surgeries and almost lost my left leg because of surgery #4, causing the need for #5. I still have very little to no cartiledge and am in constant pain of varying levels daily. I know how you feel! Get better!

I have a new pattern I am going to try, I've been talking to Don Hanson and he told me I could use one his patterns for a small edc knife. Its 7.5-8.5 inches, willow leaf shaped blade, forge finish and stag scales with an un contoured handle. Since I don't forge I have an old weather beaten bar of D2 I'm going to try to see if it will look like an acceptable "forge finish" for the flats. We'll see. I have to pick up some materials for finishing out my tanto, maybe I'll get those today, I need more epoxy too, I think I'll give the G-Flex a try, been using West systems 105/205 but its pricey!

I've tried that before and it can be a little sketchy at times. Don't want to crack the blade, been there-done that. I have a 2 brick forge but I don't have the setup for plate quench and cryo which D2 needs. It will be sent out for heat treat, so I think this one will be fine the way it is, I may try a little texturing with a ball burr like Serge Panchenko does, but do it before heat treat so there is contast between th finished blade and unfinished flats.

Daniel, I know you don't work this way, but what is a good pre heat treat edge thickness for standard D2?

Oh that is too cool! I am a big fan of DH's work! He is the best.

Try the West System G-Flex, the $20 package will do 100 knives.

I have tested it, a 3# sledge didn't phase a frozen drilled out G-flex attached handle. I tried everything, even a blowtorch did not degrade the epoxy enough to pull the scales off. It is flexible too!

You can go very thin, I just ht'd 6 tantos last night and they were ready to sharpen. (well these will be zero beveled but you know...) Just keep the bevel even.

I have no idea on the forging but I do know D2 is very hard to work with. Even annealed it just eats the belts. I like to use fresh belts for bevels then re-use them on the flats... with D2 they need new belts for every side! lmao it was a bad day for my belt supply yesterday, I used every 120 and 280 belt I had.

Ugh, don't ever offer to mow your neighbors lawn after drinking beer and rum all morning! I'm glad I edged my own lawn halfway straight! Oh well, he's a bachelor (lucky bastard) and tends to let his lawn go for months. I just get tireed offf it! Well back too it, doubt if I willl put steel to grinder today, Sailor Jerry is whoopin my arse when coupled with sierra Nevada Torpedo!
