The wife and I got some last week from the Crab Depot in Joppatowne, MD. $50/dozen large. Delish!

Unfortunately we're doing burgers this weekend.

Joppatowne, I'm right up the road in Norrisville. Good to see Hazard County residents here.

Went to St. Michaels with the wife for our 10th anniversary 2 weekends ago and got some at Chesapeake Landing. Best I've had in a long time.
    I love MD.

Best commercial crab cake I've had anywhere, fried grouper is really good too. Gonna have to get a crabcake dinner this week.

I can't eat crabs in a restaurant. I don't do guts, plus there aren't many places I have seen in the state that sell them. Which is weird since there are traps around most of the state. Funny how they can be so popular in one part of the country but not in another area that has many of them.

I buy them occasionally and clean them myself, then boil. I don't understand what the point of boiling them whole with old bay or another crab boil. The flavor won't permeate their shell. It doesn't even really flavor the meat when the shell has been removed like how I do. If you put them in the freezer for 20 min or so they go dormant and it doesn't seem as cruel when ripping them apart.

+1 from NY. Plus as I understand it, the gooky stuff inside them isn't roux, it's their hepatopancreas, which filters out all of the toxins they ingest - not a good thing to eat! Remove shell, face, gills, guts, then cook in some pasta sauce and throw on top of some liguine. Doesn't get better!

Do you guys steam or boil your blue crabs? One of the last times I cooked up a pot of them, they turned out mushy. I think I cooked them like normal so I don't know if it might have been the crabs or time of year? If you boil them, mind sharing how long you cook them? I guess I can steam them but I will have to rig something up.

    Thanks.

Every once in a while I'll get a mushy crab. I've been eating them steamed my whole life. Last year at the beach my buddy's girlfriend boiled some crabs we bought live and I told her she was gonna screw em' up and make em' mushy. They turned out so I couldn't tell the difference. Delicious. You may have got some bad ones. I'm not sure, though.
