Reviews?

I'm just curious. How many of you knife nuts make your final decision whether or not to buy a knife based on reviews either written or on video?

I never watch any videos and rarely even take the time to read a "review" thread here on the forum. I tend to just get one if I like the looks or the idea of the pattern and decide for myself if it's good or not.

Thats mostly the manner I purchase too. Reviews, I will read but mostly to see what someone thinks of that model and he could have tried some stuff I never have. So, they are interesting. Then sometimes you read off the wall stuff that makes you wonder what planet he's on. But thats the computer world-- everyone's an expert having actually done little. We mostly buy knives on eye appeal and in the hand feel. DM

If I watch a review, it's mostly for entertainment value. I buy knives that I already know I like, or, if it's a new pattern, one that catches my curiosity, either through materials used, or some unique design I haven't tried yet. Some wind up as curios in my collection, others get carried and used. Sometimes it's nice to try something different and see just what the appeal is.
I've never gone looking for reviews before purchasing a knife.

I only watch a review on knives I'm seriously thinking about buying. It gives me a better perspective on knife to hand size and fit&finish.

I guess I am with the majority. I buy knives that I like and only watch reviews online to see the size. I have found most reviews to be a bit dumb at best.

Like the OP, I buy what moves me.......and I see what I like alot!!!!

Some of those items I see are from the photo's you folks post here on the forum. I don't put any stock in another's review as we all judge in different ways, based on our own needs and expectations.

I only buy proven models and designs that were well tested in the last century.

I too like the classics, but I'm very happy that I'm not so old and set in my ways that I can't appreciate the new stuff also.

I will qualify my statement about reviews a bit. There are guys here on this and the BCCI forum that I have the utmost respect for and when they make statements or give their impressions of a knife, I will take that into consideration.

I do get a great deal of buying ideas from you fellas here on the forum based on what you say, I dont think I've ever checked out more that 1 or 2 reviews. I thing they were probably youtube links that someone put in a thread here.

I like to get as much info about a knife before I fork over the cash. So I watch videos and read reviews. It's too much hassle to buy something, discover you don't like it, then get rid of it. Videos give a better sense of size and operation, plus I don't know a lot about knives.

I too have no need for reviews. I know where this came from, and some people that are new to the knife game/hobby depend on reviews for the lack of knowledge or ability to research a knife on there own. Most people on this forum have done extensive study and have spent hours reading what people think of the knives we love. The format of discussions doesn't equate to a review but essentially that is what it is. Newbies are exactly that new, and aren't quite sure what to think or like for that matter. Reviews have a place but most of don't require one to know what it that we like.

It depends on the price. The pricier the knife, the more research I do. I prefer to watch the videos that actually show the knife in use, not just someone sitting in their living room talking about it telling me things I can alread see. Most times, if its a good knife, the reviews will mostly be good. I will admit, that sometimes, if the reviews are mixed, I will buy it if I like the way it looks and feels. What works for me, may not work for someone else and vice versa. I do think that research is a good thing and with the internet blasting that information to the world, it is causing makers to consider the opinion of the user moreso than in pre internet days.

The Dutchman in me hates wasting money so I do a lot of research when buying just about anything, especially knives.

Yes, the internet reviews does cause makers to consider their comments. Yet, it doesn't mean the writer is accurate in their assessment. Something akin to the weatherman's predictions. DM
