"Grunter Hunter" with hamon!

A grunter is a Razor Back....these guys hunt them (and reduce the over whelming population) with dogs and use just a knife. The term "pig sticker"....any way, Adam contacted me and wanted a double edge non-dagger with a hamon for use in this sport. I did a lil research, watched a couple you tube videos on it and shared a dozen emails with him and this is what we came up with.

The knives turned out great, nice and comfortable, sharp as heck and the hamon looks great too!

I make my own mycarta and made these sheaths....they are tactical style. The sheaths passed the dog test (let the dog play with them in the back yard for 45 mins while I helplessly chase him) but I did have to kinda re-sand them. I did not polish the mycarta as grip was important and wet mycarta is the best (plus blood stains will mark it every time)

I was about 3 weeks late completing these....lots of bugs to work out since it was my first time making mycarta sheaths. I learned a lot tho and think I will keep doing this!

Is that tiny amount of clay really all you put on?

Thanks, and yes with 1075-1084 it doesn't take much. I find with 1095 I use more clay (but not by much)and take it to a little bit higher of a temperature with a longer soak time to get the hamon to turn out.

Sweet, thanks! I learned enough that I think on my next one like this, I'm gonna do some cool jigging on the handle and continue it on through the sheath. If I get my tolerances a lil better I could make it like one big piece. Imagine that on a katana!

I would love to see one with a rounded choil, or no choil. Keep the square stress risers to a minimum.

Looks like you got a great hamon action with just that little bit of clay.

I heat it to just above crit....soak for maybe 2 mins and dunk in warm water for a 3 count and pull them out and hang them up for 15 mins then temper.

As far as no choil....

How much would it cost to have one custom-made? Say, about the size of a whopping good Bowie, maybe 16-17 inches overall, with a 12-inch blade made like that one?
